In the Movies $11.18 Since Priority’s 2003 compilation Greatest Hits grabbed some of the most important tracks this West Coast G gave to soundtracks, their 2007 Ice Cube collection In the Movies isn’t the grand discography helper it could have been. It’s best for the faithful fans who bought all the albums but not all the soundtracks Cube landed on or those who don’t mind a little redundancy as long as they get to take a nostalgic ride back to the ’90s when the hip-hop soundtrack was king. Tracks from Murder Was the Case (“Natural Born Killaz”), Boyz N the Hood (“How to Survive in South Central”), I Got the Hook Up (“Ghetto Vet”), The Players Club (“‘We Be Clubbin’”), and Friday (“Friday”) prove Cube was on the best of them, often with the soundtrack’s key cut. The rest of the set is more archival than vital, but there’s nothing here that suggests the rapper was taking the Hollywood money and running. Even the low point — “Right Here, Right Now,” the collaboration with dance producer Paul Oakenfold for the Blade 2 soundtrack — deserves a C+, and while including the 1991 track “The Wrong Nigga to Fuck Wit” on the collection because it landed in the 2001 film Scary Movie 2 seems like cheating, it is an amazing cut. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi Performers: Mack 10 – Vocals (Background)

Eyelid Movies $10.38 Seeing that the New York duo Phantogram’s debut album is on Barsuk, one might assume they are gentle indie rockers or, since they are a male/female duo, maybe something along the lines of Mates of State. You might not guess that they are trip-hop revivalists. They are though, and Eyelid Movies sounds like nothing other than a lost Mono or Alpha record. All the hallmarks of the trip-hop sound are here: the hip-hop drum loops, the off-kilter guitar lines that sound like they were sampled from spy films, actual samples that probably are from old film scores, the dreamily atmospheric synths that cushion the beats like fluffy pillows, and most of all, vocalist Sarah Barthel’s whisper-sweet vocals. To the duo’s credit, the sound totally works and the record sounds less like a rip than it does a loving re-creation. Songs like “As Far as I Can See” or “When I’m Small” sound as good as anything trip-hoppers back in 1993 were doing. Plus, they add some elements to the basic template that help make things interesting, especially on the songs that Josh Carter sings. “Turn It Off” ups the tempo and adds chopped-up vocal loops, “Bloody Palms” adds a level of angry drama the rest of that album lacks, and most impressively “You Are the Ocean” is a rippling guitar-based dream pop ballad that shows a healthy knowledge of A.R. Kane’s catalog. (It’s about time they got a look in!) Eyelid Movies is a nostalgia trip at heart, but it isn’t a lifeless pastiche by any means. The amount of care the duo gives to the arrangements, the subtle and successful blending of influences, and above all, the high quality of the songs and performances, mean that the record is a success on its own terms. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi

A Year at the Movies $18.39 Canadian quartet Social Code are a raging post-grunge alternative rock act trapped in the body of a pop-punk band: A Year at the Movies is full of the aforementioned rockers brimming with the latter’s emo-like lyrics. These are then spouted by a gravelly Travis Nesbitt, no doubt singing live to masses of Good Charlotte and Billy Talent T-shirts. The guys are nearly a rehash of late-’90s club pleasers Lit and SR-71, though with a youthful exuberance (regardless of whatever their ages may be) big enough for arenas. Seeing as the band originally came together in 1999, though, it’s probably fitting all the same. Huge chords, lofty choruses, crunching guitars, and bashing drums may all combine for each attitude-fueled track, but Social Code also manage to indulge their sensitive side in the power-angst of tracks like “Gone Away,” “I Was Wrong,” and “Perfect Grave.” “Beautiful” is a riff-bouncing, invigorating mix of passionate vocals and driving rhythms supported by an amusing background section of shouted “Bahm! Bahm! Bahm!” that’s near impossible to not bop along to, while “Whisper to a Scream (Birds Fly)” includes a soaring chorus on top of tumbling drumbeats and the inclusion of occasional screams (hah, get it?). The empowered “Cats and Dogs” is largely propelled by spirited background vocals and, at track number four, somewhat marks the end of the album’s most distinctive tracks. The rest of the album is more than competent albeit standard rock, presumably helped along in part by Jeff Blue’s clean production touch and the expert mixing skills of Mark Trombino (blink-182, Jimmy Eat World). Everything seems to rise, explode, and put itself back together repeatedly with both precision and skill. Because Social Code are hardly playing anything new, it almost feels wrong to enjoy the overall album as much as you do. Harburg, Lorenz Hart, Gus Kahn, Jay Livingston, Richard Rodgers, Jule Styne, Harry Warren, and Vincent Youmans, and to perform (on these, mostly non-soundtrack studio versions) backed by such bandleaders as Frank DeVol, Percy Faith, Ray Heindorf, Harry James, Axel Stordahl, and Paul Weston. The LED lamps will remain off until one cell reaches a voltage of 3.7 volts. Then balancing will begin. By the time the charge is complete the pack should be balanced. If the cells blink at random the pack is closely balanced. If a few LED’s remain on all the time these cells have a higher voltage then the other cells and more balancing is needed. When the charge is almost complete all the LED’s will turn on. Balancing After Charging Connect the Balancer to the pack. The balancer will begin discharging every cell that has more than 4.15 volts. When all cells are 4.15 volts or less then the balancer will begin balancing to the lowest cell. When all Led’s turn off or occasionally blink at random, then the pack is balanced
