Movies Is Magic

Movies Is Magic

$13.58

Following the elaborate sonic tribute that was the Dedications album, Klimek’s return to a full-length effort with Movies Is Magic found the Berlin-based Sebastian Meissner creating perhaps his more elaborate, entrancing release to that point in his career. Beginning with the appropriately titled “Abyss of Anxiety (Unfolding the Magic),” with a looped combination of distorted string samples that sound like they’re unraveling over a bottomless pit, Klimek finds a key inspiration in not merely the combination of sonic sources but the way they seem to bleed into each other. The sense of crumbling edges persists throughout Movies Is Magic, a sense of a decaying tape soundtrack with calmer tones and rhythms as a subtle bed, where often the impact is of stark moods (the slow brass moans and squeals on “Greed, Mutation, Betrayal”). The variety of styles throughout prompts any number of fascinating comparisons without sounding like knockoffs — if the military drums on “True Enemies and False Friends” suggests In the Nursery, for instance, it couldn’t be confused with a track by that band in turn. Elsewhere, the cleaner stabs of synth on “Exploding Unbearable Desires,” seemingly beamed in from a strange art rock record circa 1982, add a further shimmering unreality to the swell then fall of the whooshing tones and echoed melodica — as if Vangelis had scored a version of Neuromancer instead of Blade Runner. The sense of classic dub echo and crawl — but not necessarily threat — crops up as well in songs like “Pathetic and Dangerous,” while “For Whom the Bell Tolls” may not be a Metallica cover but is a striking penultimate song for a remarkable album, one of 2009′s most unexpectedly adventurous releases. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi Performers: Michael Gira – Vocals

The Latest

The Latest

$12.78

If calling their fifteenth studio album The Latest doesn’t exactly suggest enthusiasm on the part of Cheap Trick, keep in mind that the band has never shown much enthusiasm for album titles anyway, titling two albums after their band and one after their hometown of Rockford, IL. The Latest follows 2006′s Rockford by three years and does indeed offer the latest spin on the band’s classic power pop, flowing naturally from that quite excellent back-to-basics set, offering another collection of 13 guitar-heavy pop tunes. After the brief, ominous opener “Sleep Forever,” a misleading slice of spacy, hazy, mood rock fades away, Cheap Trick tear into the overlooked Slade gem “When the Lights Are Out,” suggesting that The Latest will be a high-octane rock-fest, but apart from a handful of other moments — including the raging “Sick Man of Europe” and the “Slow Down” revamp “California Girl” — a lot of the record consists of thick Beatlesque psychedelia, an appealing shift in tactics that makes this something a little bit different than yet another Cheap Trick record. That said, reinvention isn’t the order of the day, staying true to the spirit of their classic ’70s trilogy is, and the band acquits themselves admirably, turning out a tight, tuneful collection of proudly unfashionable power pop. And if the best song here is a cover of Slade’s “When the Lights Are Out,” well, it could be argued that the Move’s “California Man” was the best song on Heaven Tonight, too. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Bun E. A Day at the Movies

A Day at the Movies

$7.98

This exceptionally well-programmed compilation album is a triple threat. First, it assembles, in chronological order, notable songs that Doris Day sang in her films during her first decade as a movie star; second, with titles like “It’s Magic,” “Secret Love,” and “Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera),” it functions as a hits collection; and, perhaps surprisingly, third, it arguably is a rarities album as well. Annotator Max O. Preeo, writing with the benefit of an interview with his subject, notes that the version of “It’s Magic” included here is the actual original hit version recorded in 1947; apparently all subsequent reissues of the song have been of a re-recording Day did in 1952. Several other songs, including the title tunes from her second and third films, My Dream Is Yours and It’s a Great Feeling, are given their first release since they came out initially, and the version of “I Love The Way You Say Goodnight” from Lullaby of Broadway is released commercially for the first time. While making a series of musicals for Warner Bros. pictures in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Day benefited from the opportunity to sing old and new songs by such classic pop writers as Sammy Cahn, Vernon Duke, Ray Evans, Sammy Fain, E.Y. Harburg, Lorenz Hart, Gus Kahn, Jay Livingston, Richard Rodgers, Jule Styne, Harry Warren, and Vincent Youmans, and to perform (on these, mostly non-soundtrack studio versions) backed by such bandleaders as Frank DeVol, Percy Faith, Ray Heindorf, Harry James, Axel Stordahl, and Paul Weston. She made the most of those connections, using her band-singer background and warm tone to create performances that were the highpoints of the often flimsy films in which they appeared. The results are here to enjoy. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Doris Day – Vocals

The Classics at the Movies: War

The Classics at the Movies: War

$7.18

Naxos’ Classics at the Movies series is really only tangentially linked to the film music it presents, since the majority of each release is actually traditional classical pieces that happened to be used by certain films. For its War installment, the label has chosen music from Chopin, Mozart, and Strauss, from films like G.I. Jane, The Peacemaker, and The Devil’s Own. While these films’ weight in the entire history of war movies is debatable, the compositions included are performed with appropriate grace and professionalism by an assortment of symphony orchestras, soloists, and choirs. And while it’s certainly one of the most recognizable classical pieces on its own, the inclusion of Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” here is predictable, yet mandatory, since it’s part of the defining image of Apocalypse Now, a war epic if there ever was one. (Or, it’s at least more of a war epic than The Peacemaker.) ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi Performers: Kosice Teacher’s Choir – Choir, Chorus; Oxford Schola Cantorum – Choir, Chorus; Idil Biret – Piano; Luba Orgonasova – Vocals; Norbert Kraft – Guitar

Funeral at the Movies/Ten Spot

Funeral at the Movies/Ten Spot

$12.78

A compilation of two early releases, Funeral at the Movies/Ten Spot is part of Shudder to Think’s beginning. The band’s sound is already surprisingly complex and original, performed by their first lineup (which would splinter after one more release). Funeral at the Movies includes the first version of the recurring “Red House” (later re-recorded for the Hit Liquor EP and 50,000 B.C.), a manic version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Crosstown Traffic,” and the early fan favorite “Chocolate.” The first half of the lengthy “I Blew Away/Ride That Sexy Horse” is a soaring R.E.M.-sounding rocker, while the second half is nothing more than feedback with talking over the noise. Parts of Ten Spot were recorded a full year prior to Funeral, but the sound and formula are strikingly similar. “About Three Dreams” contains some intricate bass and guitar work courtesy of Stuart Hill and Chris Matthews, while “Corner of My Eye” shows off Mike Russell’s tribal drumming. And there are plenty of vocal heroics throughout, courtesy of the multi-talented Craig Wedren. The production and overall sound of the two albums aren’t as textured as future releases would turn out to be, as the group opts for a more straightforward approach. However, this compilation was an important stepping stone for the future musical schizophrenia of Shudder to Think. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi Performers: Chris Matthews – Guitar; Craig Wedren – Vocals, Guitar; Mike Russell – Drums; Stuart Hill – Bass

Erotic Grit Movies

Erotic Grit Movies

$11.98

Obviously, one just wants any album with a title as wicked-cool as Erotic Grit Movies to be a garage-rocking classic in the tradition of the Cramps. Song titles like “Girls Like It Too” and “Weird Things Can Happen” only up the ante. Yet while Erotic Grit Movies has its hard-partying charms, Farfisa organist Ami is matched only by the The 45′s Trey Tidwell as a master of this über-punk instrument, and singer Jamie has seemingly no respect for his own larynx, given the abuse he metes out to it throughout these 12 songs. But the overall effect is less Cramps-like fun than a mixture of Fun House-era Stooges fury and the first wave of British punk bands’ desperation. The songs are largely of the short sharp-shock variety — half of them are under two minutes — but even in those brief settings, the group manages to create both tension and release; in this context, a longer workout like the comparatively expansive four-minute closer “Sound Mutilation” serves the same function as the Stooges’ apocalyptic “L.A. Blues,” taking the album’s aggressive aesthetic to its logical conclusion. Not fun, perhaps, but appealing. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi Performers: Ami – Organ; Nai Sammon – Guitar; Ryan Sabatis – Saxophone, Drums

 Let It Go

Tim McGraw has spent the last decade in the upper reaches of the entertainment world. His is a career marked by superlatives–by record-breaking tours and multi-platinum albums, and more recently by an expanding presence in movies. And yet, at bottom, McGraw’s success is part and parcel of his Everyman status, of his ability to be known as husband and father as well as singer and actor, as citizen and friend as well as superstar. It is his believability, his knack for connecting with his audiences, whether he is singing a classic like Live Like You Were Dying or portraying the troubled father in Friday Night Lights, that have made his hard-won triumphs possible. Now, McGraw carries that legacy forward with the release of his latest CD, Let It Go, a collection with all the passion and vitality his legions of fans have come to expect from him.Let It Go, co-produced by McGraw with Byron Gallimore and Darran Smith, longtime lead guitarist and bandleader for McGraw’s band, the Dancehall Doctors, showcases both his believability and the talent and charisma that have parlayed him into superstar status. Its themes are life and love, pain and joy, and the universal human striving for betterment, for rising above our surroundings and ourselves. The width of its 13 track spectrum can be gauged from two songs about freedom, Last Dollar, the album ‘s debut single, with its light touch on the subject, and the title cut, a soul-searing look at the process of carrying on in the wake of the baggage the past can hang on us. It deals with the pain of regret in Whiskey And You and Kristofferson, I’m Workin’ and Comin’ Home, suspicion in the song of the same name, and even revenge, in The River And Me. Faith Hill joins Tim on two of the album’s tracks, I Need You, a bit of passion and power in the tradition of their widely acclaimed duets, and Shotgun Rider, which channels Desperado, offering some of the hope an
