Truly: The Love Songs $9.13 Since it contains six tunes that Richie wrote and performed as lead singer of the Commodores, the title for this collection may be technically a little misleading. That said, those who appreciate Richie’s instantly recognizable vocal style are unlikely to complain about the inclusion of such pop standards as “Three Times a Lady,” “Still,” and “Easy.” Maybe it’s the passage of time, but Richie’s s… |

A Day at the Movies $7.98 This exceptionally well-programmed compilation album is a triple threat. First, it assembles, in chronological order, notable songs that Doris Day sang in her films during her first decade as a movie star; second, with titles like “It’s Magic,” “Secret Love,” and “Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera),” it functions as a hits collection; and, perhaps surprisingly, third, it arguably is a rarities album as well. Annotator Max O. Preeo, writing with the benefit of an interview with his subject, notes that the version of “It’s Magic” included here is the actual original hit version recorded in 1947; apparently all subsequent reissues of the song have been of a re-recording Day did in 1952. Several other songs, including the title tunes from her second and third films, My Dream Is Yours and It’s a Great Feeling, are given their first release since they came out initially, and the version of “I Love The Way You Say Goodnight” from Lullaby of Broadway is released commercially for the first time. While making a series of musicals for Warner Bros. pictures in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Day benefited from the opportunity to sing old and new songs by such classic pop writers as Sammy Cahn, Vernon Duke, Ray Evans, Sammy Fain, E.Y. Harburg, Lorenz Hart, Gus Kahn, Jay Livingston, Richard Rodgers, Jule Styne, Harry Warren, and Vincent Youmans, and to perform (on these, mostly non-soundtrack studio versions) backed by such bandleaders as Frank DeVol, Percy Faith, Ray Heindorf, Harry James, Axel Stordahl, and Paul Weston. She made the most of those connections, using her band-singer background and warm tone to create performances that were the highpoints of the often flimsy films in which they appeared. The results are here to enjoy. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi Performers: Doris Day – Vocals |

Released $10.39 This Australian compilation gathers 21 songs from a small period in the career of Nina Simone, the 1967-1968 era of the British hit “Ain’t Got No (I Got Life)” and LPs like 1967′s Silk & Soul. Those looking for a tight collection of Simone’s crossover period will find much to love here, from “It Be’s That Way Sometimes” and “The Backlash Blues” to covers of “I Shall Be Released,” “Just Like a Woman,” and “The Look of Love.” The big caveat, however, is the presence of “Ain’t Got No (I Got Life)” only in a live version, which makes this collection much more difficult to justify. It’s worth picking up on a whim, but definitely not a careful search. ~ John Bush, Rovi Performers: Nina Simone – Vocals |

At The Movies – Double Feature [Bonus DVD] $19.98 Lush, heartfelt, and elegant, At the Movies finds smooth jazz saxophonist Dave Koz celebrating his favorite movie themes. Featured here are such classic movie melodies as “Over the Rainbow,” “The Shadow of Your Smile,” and “The Pink Panther,” as well as more contemporary songs like “A Whole New World” and the main theme from “Schindler’s List.” Showcased beautifully throughout At the Movies is Koz’s deftly melodic and supple saxophone sound, which truly evinces his obvious love of film and film music. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s often backed by a full orchestra and a big band here: they add to the widescreen, cinematic sound he’s going for. Also engaging are Koz’s guest artist choices, including trumpeter Chris Botti, vocalists Johnny Mathis, Barry Manilow, Donna Summer, Vanessa Williams, and others. A year after the original album produced by Phil Ramone appeared, and then appended and re-released with a coupe of bonus cuts (including “Alfie,” and “Love Theme from the Godfather”) produced by Koz, hardcore fans get to buy it all over again. [Just in time for Valentine's Day 2008, At the Movies gets another reissue with a bonus DVD containing ten of the performances with singers Vanessa Williams, Johnny Mathis, Peter White, and Barry Manilow reprising their performances in front of the camera.] ~ Matt Collar and Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Ingrid Bergman – Spoken Word; Bill Meredith – Horn (English); Birch Johnson – Trombone (Tenor); Diane Lesser – Horn (English), Oboe; Joe Passaro – Tympani [Timpani]; Larry Farrell – Trombone (Tenor); Marc Goldberg – Bassoon; Ron Jannelli – Bassoon; Adrian Benjamin – Viola; Anne Scharer – French Horn; Chris Hall – Tuba; Craig Mumm – Viola; Crystal Garner – Viola; Diane Barere – Cello; Ellen Westerman – Cello; |

Sex Style: The Un-Released Archives $15.18 Although Dr. Octagon wasn’t released until 1996, KutMasta Kurt was busy producing music with Kool Keith as far back as 1993. A few of these tracks have been floating around on fuzzy dubbed cassette tapes over the years and even a few have wound up on bootlegs, but now we officially get a chance to hear these archived tracks as intended. The CD is a 2,500 copy limited-edition digipack release. Each CD has been individually numbered, and includes a 12 page lyric sheet. The original Sex Style has sound scanned well over 35,000 copies to date and this album is an essential companion for any fan of the original 1997 release. In fact with Sex Style’s recent limited edition reissue creating a nice buzz at retail, this is the perfect time for this new release to drop. |

Elvis Movies $10.39 Elvis Presley’s movie soundtracks have long been notorious for being among his worst material — who can forget the legendary vinyl bootleg of ’60s movie soundtrack highlights called Elvis’ Greatest Shit? — but among the dreck, there were some wonderful songs, ideal for a single-disc compilation along the lines of Movies, which is one of six thematic Elvis compilations released in 2006. Unfortunately, Movies falls short of being a perfect comp of these highlights, since it misses such big songs as “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “Return to Sender,” and “A Little Less Conversation” (plus such enjoyable throwaways as “Bossa Nova Baby”) are missing. Despite this, much of this 24-track collection is very good, containing such Elvis ’60s standards as “Blue Hawaii,” “G.I. Blues,” “Follow That Dream,” and “Viva Las Vegas,” and also stretching back to the ’50s for “Love Me Tender,” “Loving You,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “King Creole.” So even if this isn’t an ideal collection of highlights from Elvis’ soundtracks, it is an entertaining one, and worthwhile for those looking for a sampler of Elvis’ best movie work. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |

Nixon at the Movies $27.5 Was it an omen? Richard Nixon and the film industry arrived in Southern California in the same year, 1913. As Mark Feeney relates in this unusual and unusually absorbing book, Nixon and the movies have shared a long and complex history. Some of that history—the president’s multiple screenings of Patton before and during the invasion of Cambodia, or Oliver Stone’s Nixon —is well known. Yet much more is not. How many are aware, for example, that Nixon was an enthusiastic filmgoer who watched more than five hundred movies during his presidency? Nixon at the Movies takes a new and often revelatory approach to looking at Nixon’s career—and Hollywood’s. From the obvious ( All the President’s Men ) to the less so (Elvis Presley movies and Nixon’s relationship to ’60s youth culture) to several onscreen “alternate” Nixons (Fred MacMurray in Double Indemnity , Tony Curtis in The Sweet Smell of Success , Gene Hackman in The Conversation ), Feeney sees aspects of Nixon’s character, and the nation’s, refracted and reimagined in film. Conversely, Feeney argues that Nixon can help us see the movies in a new light, making a strong case for Nixon as the movies’ tutelary deity during the early ’70s, playing a role in Hollywood’s Silver Age comparable to FDR’s during its Golden Age. Stylishly written and bracingly eclectic, Nixon at the Movies draws on biography, politics, cultural history, and film criticism to show just how deeply in the twentieth-century American grain lies the pair of seemingly incongruous nouns in its title. As Nixon once remarked to Garry Wills: “Isn’t that a hell of a thing, that the fate of a great country can depend on camera angles?” |

Midnight Movies $5.89 Stuart Samuels’s popular documentary Midnight Movies: From Margin to Mainstream grounds itself in the thesis that six revolutionary American motion pictures – Night of the Living Dead (1968), El Topo (1970), Pink Flamingoes (1972), The Harder they Come (1972), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) and Eraserhead (1976) – invented the concept of “midnight movies” and thus permanently reshaped the American film industry per se and the composition of the average U.S. film audience, creating a new “brand” of viewer. Samuels and his team tell the story of this odd subgenre as it evolved, peaked in popularity, and then faded gradually from view. The bulk of the picture consists of a myriad of interviews with the directors of these films per se (John Waters, Alejandro Jodorowsky, David Lynch, Perry Henzel, George Romero – Jim Sharman appears in archive footage only), cast members, theater owners who found their business reinvigorated by this trend, critics such as Roger Ebert who reflect on the era, and of course the films’ fans. The documentary also features extended clips from the movies and period news footage about the rise in popularity of the said titles. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Bellydance For Core Fitness $14.98 Bellydance is an amazing art and one of the world’s oldest fitness disciplines. Bellydance emphasizes movements of the abdomen and pelvis, and is an ideal way to develop deep abdominal core strength. Passed down from mother to daughter, this ancient celebratory dance became the traditional method for imparting body awareness, techniques of posture and movement, both natural and beneficial to the female body, as well as preparation for and recovery from childbirth. In our age of sedentary lifestyles and stress-induced back pain, the bellydance fitness program developed by New York dancer and dance movement researcher, Ayshe, will help you regain and maintain abdominal core awareness and strength, an important step toward healthy and graceful posture, back pain relief, and safer ways to move your body.Bellydance Core Fitness Workout flows from a warmup and isolations that engage your core muscles, to dance combinations and a beautiful dance routine.Every movement in the workout has a name that can be referenced in the tutorial section, where each is carefully explained. The tutorial section contains a 1 hour 40 min. in-depth presentation by Ayshe, explaining the roles of the core muscles in the anatomy of dance movement, and their impact on our health and postural habits. In this program we focus on the abdominal core muscles that span the lower spine, pelvis, and legs. Of main importance are the psoas and iliacus (iliopsoas), the key muscles for structural balance in the human body. The balanced fully-functional psoas is crucial for women’s health. If the psoas is in a state of contraction or atrophy it will affect the reproductive system by restricting blood supply and disrupting the positioning of the organs within the pelvis. Menstrual cramping is often caused by the psoas exerting pressure on the reproductive organs when they are in a state of tenderness. A healthy, released psoas will bring relief from cramping and lower back pain.System Requirements:R |

Hugely controversial when first released, A Clockwork Orange won the New York Film Critics Best Picture and Director honors and earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. The power of its art is such that it still entices, shocks and holds us in its grasp. |

Dillinger Escape Plan-Miss MacHine $2.72 New Jersey’s Dillinger Escape Plan’s first full-length album, Calculating Infinity, released in 1999, changed the face of hard music with its unclassifiable sound; five years later comes their equally incredible follow-up, Miss Machine. The two worlds of math rock and hardcore combine, with influences from metal, jazz, Latin, and even classical showing up on this complex, intricate record. New vocalist Greg Puciato makes his appearance here with driving vocals that move surprisingly into harmony at times with the synthesized strings and piano, and the music moves unapologetically between math metal and a more industrial sound. Intelligent, streamlined and highly technical as it is, this record retains the forceful, punishing quality of Calculating Infinity to once again set the world of rock spinning; this deluxe edition includes a DVD of the band playing the legendary Hellfest concert.Format: DVD MOVIE |

A man in Spanish Harlem, quoted in a profile of Anthony in The New Yorker, said of him, He is like a flame that walks. When I Dream at Night, the first song on Marc Anthony, was written by Dan Shea and Robin Thicke. Its chorus begins ‘Cause I only feel alive/ When I dream at night/ Even though she’s not real it’s all right. It’s sort of a custom-made love song, Anthony says. The three of us were talking about subjects for songs, and I told them a story I was going through. ‘There’s a situation,’ I said, ‘There’s this girl in my dreams that I see all the time.’ |

Nfl Americas Game-Oakland Raiders 3pk $24.99 Under the leadership of Al Davis, the Oakland Raiders were one of the dominant NFL teams from the mid-60′s, throughout the 70′s and even into the early 80′s. In 1976, the Raiders won a team record 13 games, defeated the Patriots and Steelers in the playoffs and reached the summit of professional football with their victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI.. Nobody loves reclamation projects more than Davis. Former Heisman Trophy winner, Jim Plunkett was cast out of New England and released by San Francisco before arriving in Oakland in 1978. In week 6 of the 1980 season, Head Coach, Tom Flores, gave Plunkett his chance. With an MVP performance, Plunkett rewarded his team’s confidence in him by leading the Raiders to victory in Super Bowl XV. Led by Flores, the 1983 Raiders entered Super Bowl XVIII as underdogs to the highest scoring team in the NFL, the Washington Redskins. But the Raiders held that offense to just 9 points and manhandled the Redskins 38-9 to win their third Vince Lombardi Trophy. The story of the 1976 Raiders is told by Hall of Fame Head Coach, John Madden, Quarterback Ken Stabler and Linebacker Phil Villapiano. Plunkett, Linebacker Matt Millen and Hall of Fame Guard, Gene Upshaw recount the Raiders season of 1980. And the Raiders championship season of 1983 is retold by Hall of Fame Running Back, Marcus Allen, Tight End Todd Christenson and Defensive Tackle Howie Long, another Hall of Famer. |

One Eyed Jacks $9.4 Early in 1959 Marlon Brando began one of his most unique projects of his career – directing himself in One-Eyed Jacks. Taken from Charles Neider’s novel, One-Eyed Jacks is a tale of revenge set in Mexico. Stanley Kubrik was originally signed to direct, but he and Brando failed to agree on much of anything and he was dismissed four weeks prior to filming. Marlon decided to direct the movie himself. The movie went well over budget. On completion, Brando the director had set a new world record by exposing over one million feet of film stock. — It’s the Old West of 1880, and Brando stars as Kid Rio who along with his partner, Dad Longworth (Karl Malden) are bank robbers who are caught holding up a Mexican bank. Longworth gets away and allows his partner to get caught and go to jail. When Rio is released five years later, he goes out to seek revenge, however he is surprised to find his partner is married with a stepdaughter and a sheriff of a town. Complications set in when Rio himself falls in love with the stepdaughter.System Requirements: Running Time 141 MinFormat: DVD MOVIE |

Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid (Blu-ray) $11.69 Queen Rock Montreal Hello Montreal… long time no see. You wanna get crazy? Queen Rock Montreal, recorded live at Montreal’s 18,000 seater Forum over two nights in November 1981, is a celebration of Queen at the very height of their 80′s record breaking achievements. It is also a historic recording of the very last concerts of Queen raw .This was the time when Queen had topped both the US singles and album charts for the first time, had become the first band ever to top the UK singles, albums and video charts simultaneously and on their historic invasion of Latin America had broken the world attendance record for a single paying concert when 131,000 Brazilians saw the band play Sao Paulo’s Morumbi stadium. 1981 was, says John Deacon, a year for discovering new audiences we didn’t know existed. Queen ended that year of extraordinary events at Montreal’s Forum. The dates – November 24 and 25, 1981 – were scheduled specifically to make a full length film of their live show. As would be expected of Queen, they took the form of the concert film to a new level, becoming the first group to shot an entire show in full cinema format 35mm.Having spent almost two years non-stop touring, and invigorated by their triumphant Latin America experience, Queen hit Montreal in top form. This is pre the Hot Space album, before keyboards would find a place in the band’s touring line up; just four God-gifted musicians in total rapport, delivering live the energy and innovation of their studio recordings.Originally titled We Will Rock You, this film was released in North America in 1984 becoming the first commercially available film of Queen in concert. In this special edition, the 35mm negative was scanned to ensure the highest possible resolution, this was then examined frame by frame where any splices, dirt or damage were removed to enhance the sharpness and quality of the picture. Quiet Flows the Don $39.95 Based upon Mikhail Sholokhov’s Nobel Prize winning novel, Quiet Flows the Don is a spectacular, sprawling epic of the Russian Revolution and an honest, intimate drama of two lovers lost in the storm of history. Though internationally praised as the Soviet Gone With the Wind, this 1957 crowning achievement of popular Soviet filmmaking was gutted by its US distributor when released here in 1960. For the first time on US DVD, Kino offers the full-length cut of director Sergei Gerasimov’s legendary masterpiece.Within the sylvan hills of Russia’s Don River valley, Grigori, a fiery and cruel young Cossack, takes up with Aksiniya, the wife of a fellow warrior. The brawling beauty of Cossack village life and the violent upheaval of World War I and the Bolshevik Revolution form a spectacular backdrop for a romance as real as it is tragic. Driven to deception and disgrace, the two lovers battle the condemnation of the old order and the dangers of a dawning new world. After a year and a half before the cameras, director Gerasimov forged more than 60 hours of footage into a social realist epic that is as meticulous in depicting passionate human nature as it is in recreating WWI combat, the storming of the Winter Palace in old St. Petersburg and the Red Army’s bloody and ruthless drive to the sea. This four disc package has been re-mastered to preserve Quiet Flows the Don’s breathtaking color photography and Shostakovich disciple Yuri Levitin’s lush, haunting score. |

Strangers in Good Company $29.95 Strangers In Good Company is one of the most successful Canadian films ever released in [the] U.S. This highly acclaimed and award-winning film from Academy Award-winning director Cynthia Scott has been called an unlikely treasure (Washington Post), and one of the most exhilarating films ever made about people who’ve grown old but remain ageless. (New York Newsday) This truly daring and unique film (New York Daily News) tells the story of seven women who embark on a scenic bus trip through the countryside and soon find themselves stranded in a deserted farmhouse, miles from civilization. Although they don’t have much food, or a decent place to sleep, or much in common, when faced with this crisis this group of strangers find themselves forming a bond that turns the situation into a magical time filled with humor and spirit. Shot in the beautiful Mont Tremblant region of Quebec, Canada, Strangers In Good Company dissolves the boundary between fiction and reality, weaving a tale of comradeship and courage that touches and changes lives. Scott began Strangers In Good Company with the desire to make a film about the energy and spirit of people who were old, but still filled with life. This unique and unconventional film showcases seven non-professional actors who were chosen from over 400 women auditioned through social agencies, clubs and retirement homes. They are funny, poignant, unforgettable characters, and the laughter, tears and transformations they present on screen are genuine. Not using a conventional script, Scott and writer Gloria Demers have taken the real life experiences and reactions of these women and woven them into a classic tale so endearingly funny and warmly touching one hates to leave these remarkable women behind. (New York Daily News). |
