Movies Is Magic

Movies Is Magic

$13.58

Following the elaborate sonic tribute that was the Dedications album, Klimek’s return to a full-length effort with Movies Is Magic found the Berlin-based Sebastian Meissner creating perhaps his more elaborate, entrancing release to that point in his career. Beginning with the appropriately titled “Abyss of Anxiety (Unfolding the Magic),” with a looped combination of distorted string samples that sound like they’re unraveling over a bottomless pit, Klimek finds a key inspiration in not merely the combination of sonic sources but the way they seem to bleed into each other. The sense of crumbling edges persists throughout Movies Is Magic, a sense of a decaying tape soundtrack with calmer tones and rhythms as a subtle bed, where often the impact is of stark moods (the slow brass moans and squeals on “Greed, Mutation, Betrayal”). The variety of styles throughout prompts any number of fascinating comparisons without sounding like knockoffs — if the military drums on “True Enemies and False Friends” suggests In the Nursery, for instance, it couldn’t be confused with a track by that band in turn. Elsewhere, the cleaner stabs of synth on “Exploding Unbearable Desires,” seemingly beamed in from a strange art rock record circa 1982, add a further shimmering unreality to the swell then fall of the whooshing tones and echoed melodica — as if Vangelis had scored a version of Neuromancer instead of Blade Runner. The sense of classic dub echo and crawl — but not necessarily threat — crops up as well in songs like “Pathetic and Dangerous,” while “For Whom the Bell Tolls” may not be a Metallica cover but is a striking penultimate song for a remarkable album, one of 2009′s most unexpectedly adventurous releases. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi Performers: Michael Gira – Vocals

When Movies Mattered

When Movies Mattered

$18

If you have ever wanted to dig around in the archives for that perfect Sunday afternoon DVD and first turned to a witty weekly column in the New York Times , then you are already familiar with one of our nation’s premier film critics. If you love movies—and the writers who engage them—and just happen to have followed two of the highest circulating daily papers in the country, then you probably recognize the name of the intellectually dazzling writer who has been penning pieces on American and foreign films for over thirty years. And if you called the City of the Big Shoulders home in the 1970s or 1980s and relied on those trenchant, incisive reviews from the Chicago Reader and the Chicago Tribune to guide your moviegoing delight, then you know Dave Kehr.  When Movies Mattered presents a wide-ranging and illuminating selection of Kehr’s criticism from the Reader —most of which is reprinted here for the first time—including insightful discussions of film history and his controversial Top Ten lists. Long heralded by his peers for both his deep knowledge and incisive style, Kehr developed his approach to writing about film from the auteur criticism popular in the ’70s. Though Kehr’s criticism has never lost its intellectual edge, it’s still easily accessible to anyone who truly cares about movies. Never watered down and always razor sharp, it goes beyond wry observations to an acute examination of the particular stylistic qualities that define the work of individual directors and determine the meaning of individual films. From current releases to important revivals, from classical Hollywood to foreign fare, Kehr has kept us spellbound with his insightful critical commentaries. When Movies Mattered will secure his place among our very best writers about all things cinematic.

Funeral at the Movies/Ten Spot

Funeral at the Movies/Ten Spot

$12.78

A compilation of two early releases, Funeral at the Movies/Ten Spot is part of Shudder to Think’s beginning. The band’s sound is already surprisingly complex and original, performed by their first lineup (which would splinter after one more release). Funeral at the Movies includes the first version of the recurring “Red House” (later re-recorded for the Hit Liquor EP and 50,000 B.C.), a manic version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Crosstown Traffic,” and the early fan favorite “Chocolate.” The first half of the lengthy “I Blew Away/Ride That Sexy Horse” is a soaring R.E.M.-sounding rocker, while the second half is nothing more than feedback with talking over the noise. Parts of Ten Spot were recorded a full year prior to Funeral, but the sound and formula are strikingly similar. “About Three Dreams” contains some intricate bass and guitar work courtesy of Stuart Hill and Chris Matthews, while “Corner of My Eye” shows off Mike Russell’s tribal drumming. And there are plenty of vocal heroics throughout, courtesy of the multi-talented Craig Wedren. The production and overall sound of the two albums aren’t as textured as future releases would turn out to be, as the group opts for a more straightforward approach. However, this compilation was an important stepping stone for the future musical schizophrenia of Shudder to Think. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi Performers: Chris Matthews – Guitar; Craig Wedren – Vocals, Guitar; Mike Russell – Drums; Stuart Hill – Bass

The Classics at the Movies: Romance

The Classics at the Movies: Romance

$7.18

This edition of Naxos’ The Classics at the Movies series collects orchestral music from romantic films, including Jean de Florette, Out of Africa, A Room With a View, and Doctor Zhivago. Unlike some releases that feature symphonic music written specifically for the film, the Classics series gathers its material from the works of renowned composers that have been heard on the silver screen. In this case, pieces from such luminaries as Verdi, Mozart, Schubert, and Puccini appear. Highlights include Mozart’s Adagio from Clarinet Concerto, with a solo by Ernst Ottensamer of the Vienna Mozart Academy, and pianist Jenö Jandó’s performance of Schubert’s Impromptu No. 4. All of the music on The Classics at the Movies: Romance is stirring, and could certainly be seen as romantic. But the album works just as well as a collection of pleasant, relaxing classical music. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi Performers: Ernst Ottensamer – Clarinet; Janez Lotric – Vocals; Jenö Jandó – Piano; Luba Orgonasova – Vocals; Miriam Bauci – Vocals

Chess Movies 1: Quick Tricks

Chess Movies 1: Quick Tricks

$11.59

Lights! Action! Chess!Chess Movies represents a new idea in the Pandolfini Chess Library series. It offers instructional material with every single move diagrammed and explained. Thus a chessboard and pieces are not needed to follow through. This makes it possible to rely solely on the book itself as one would with a text on tactics and problems without having to set up the positions even though the present volume Quick Tricks contains games of ten full moves or more. It’s almost as if one is sitting in a movie theater watching the film roll by with the narrative carried along by subtitles. But whereas a film seen in the theater just keeps going here you can âstopâÂ? the action and take time thinking about what you’re seeing and what’s being explained to you as if you were home watching on your own DVD. In this first offering of the series Quick Tricks the reader (viewer) is provided with a collection 64 neat traps and shots in the opening illustrations often stemming from the practice of the world’s best players. There’s a variety too so that you can sample different openings and variations. All you have to do is read the beginning paragraph sit back in your living room on your favorite flight commuter bus or train ride and pleasure your way through each informative film. It’s also a great way to prepare for upcoming competition. Just find a comfortable chair and spend a few hours watching learning and enjoying your way into shape.

Since Priority’s 2003 compilation Greatest Hits grabbed some of the most important tracks this West Coast G gave to soundtracks, their 2007 Ice Cube collection In the Movies isn’t the grand discography helper it could have been. It’s best for the faithful fans who bought all the albums but not all the soundtracks Cube landed on or those who don’t mind a little redundancy as long as they get to take a nostalgic ride back to the ’90s when the hip-hop soundtrack was king. Tracks from Murder Was the Case (“Natural Born Killaz”), Boyz N the Hood (“How to Survive in South Central”), I Got the Hook Up (“Ghetto Vet”), The Players Club (“‘We Be Clubbin’”), and Friday (“Friday”) prove Cube was on the best of them, often with the soundtrack’s key cut. The rest of the set is more archival than vital, but there’s nothing here that suggests the rapper was taking the Hollywood money and running. Even the low point — “Right Here, Right Now,” the collaboration with dance producer Paul Oakenfold for the Blade 2 soundtrack — deserves a C+, and while including the 1991 track “The Wrong Nigga to Fuck Wit” on the collection because it landed in the 2001 film Scary Movie 2 seems like cheating, it is an amazing cut. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi Performers: Mack 10 – Vocals (Background)
