Chitty Chitty

More Bang for Your Buck – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang goes to auction
It’s clear that that nowadays, any children’s film with a character called ‘the child snatcher’ would never make it past the censors. Thank god then for those more naive, innocent times when such motion pictures could get away with being unique, challenging and left field. Of course the film I’m referring to is ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’. The car featured in the film was one of the most spectacular pieces of machinery every featured in a film and it is now up for sale.
It’s difficult to believe that Chitty captivated cinema audiences over forty years ago but avid fans will be pleased to know that there is a sequel in the works and, if they think Chitty exhibits some bang for their buck they can make a bid on the car with character, which is by all accounts in immaculate condition.
The car is custom made polished aluminium, red and white cedar wood and brass fittings, it houses a 3.0 litre V6 Ford engine. Having been previously looked after in Stratford-upon-Avon it will be shipped over to California where it will go up for auction this Sunday where it is expected to fetch upwards of $2 million, about the same price as a Bugatti Veyron.
If you were thinking that Chitty was more of an ornament than a fully working, road-going machine, you’d be sorely mistaken. While Dick Van Dyk’s old ride can’t quite match the searing pace of a Veyron, it is at least roadworthy and has even competed in a number of charity road races. The president of the auction company selling Chitty even claims it can fly!
For many, the real magic about Chitty is the fact that it is indeed, real. In an era when movies rely on CGI to create special effects and wow audiences, Chitty represents a simpler time when physical craftsmanship, engineering skill and manual labour made motion pictures come to life. With Chitty, everything works just as in the film, what you see is what you get, which is more than can be said for most modern motion pictures.
Guest Author – Joe Johnson
Joe is a classic car lover who would certainly make a bid for Chitty if he had a spare $2 million, or it were available on a
cheap contract hire and leasing
plan.

Doctor Dolittle $11.98 So, they let both Rex Harrison and Anthony Newley sing. This 1968 family musical is classier than the 1998 Eddie Murphy remake, with all of its scatological humor. CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG $7.98 One of the stars of Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins, Dick Van Dyke, is re-united with that film’s composer and lyricist, Richard M.Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, in this big budget and bloodless children’s fantasy musical, based on the children’s book by James Bond author Ian Fleming. Van Dyke plays Caractacus Potts, a failed inventor who lives in a big house with his two children — Jemima Heather Ripley and Jeremy Adrian Hall — and eccentric father Lionel Jeffries. Potts has to raise 30 shillings so his children can buy a broken-down racing car from the junkyard. After a disastrous attempt to sell his invention of whistling sweets to Lord Scrumptious (James Robertson-Justice), the local candy maker, he finally gets enough money for the car by doing a Dick Van Dyke dance routine at the county fair. Potts takes the car and miraculously transforms the vehicle into a shiny new car named Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. While on a picnic with the children and Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), Lord Scrumptious’ beautiful daughter, Potts concocts a fantasy tale about the magical powers of the car, which can now float on water and fly. In the tale, Baron Bomburst (Gert Frobe) wants the car for himself and kidnaps the automobile and the inventor. But Bomburst captures Grandpa by mistake along with the wrong car, so Potts, Truly, and the children have to enlist Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on a rescue mission to Bomburst’s lair to save Grandpa. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide |

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang [Original Cast Recording] $11.99 It is hard to resist the extravagant charms in the stage adaptation of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (which is based on the MGM/United Artists movie of the same name), which is billed as “the most fantasmagorical stage musical in the history of everything!” The music and lyrics of Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman complement Jeremy Sams’s stage script perfectly by creating the aural equivalent of the story’s magic (the ultimate protagonist is, of course, a flying car). A 34-piece orchestra, directed by Robert Scott, backs the original London cast (led by Michael Ball and Emma Williams) on this fine recording that works alone and as a souvenir of one’s visit to the theater. |
