The first Men’s Supra Sneakers were the Skytops

The coolest boots and shoes within the footwear market place in the moment are Supra Shoes. Supra Footwear were only available in 2005 whenever Angel Cabada decided to extend his interest in designing cool, trendy apparel to include trainers.Angel Cabada was raised within Orange, County, Ca where he or she became obsessed regarding skate boarding. He or she tried working ordinary work, but nothing survived very long. Therefore he or she made a decision to split the actual mildew and begin designing clothes with some pals. His first brand name had been TSA. TSA survived regarding 10 years before Angel split up together with his companion. He’d become familiar with a great deal concerning the business through their knowledge about TSA. Within 2002, he or she launched KR3W which is nevertheless going powerful under the outdoor umbrella of the organization 1 Submission. 1 Submission covers each KR3W and Supra Footwear. The primary plan ended up being to help to make KR3W Footwear, but Angel realised this is the conflict of interest for anyone he worked with so he made an additional company that he decided to name Supra Shoes. The actual title Supra is Latina with regard to “above as well as beyond”. Angel planned to do something to match his clothes collection, and he believed these shoes out there had been as well chunky. The first Mens Supra Sneakers had been the actual Skytops. When Angel initially created the Skytop, many people made fun associated with him. Nevertheless it offered so quickly it’s clear who had the last chuckle. Angel does not pay anyone to wear Supra footwear. He or she provides free samples to his friends plus they use them because they like them. Among those who put on Supra tend to be Steve Aoki, Chad Muska, and Samantha Ronson that would wear Women’s Supra Shoes. One reason for their attraction is the fact that individuals respond to the actual genuineness of the brand. Real skaters wear them because real skaters like all of them. Whenever Angel made the actual Precious metal 14k Edition along with Chad Muska, the consumer attention was as high as curiosity generally related to Nike. The 413 Silver Release sold out within half an hour. Supra’s NS collection premiered popular fashion powered industry events as an alternative for skateboarding stores. Titan Men Tools Cockring

Titan Men Tools Cockring

$7.95

Makes Your Tool Longer & Harder! Super stretchy TPR material formed in a sleek design will keep your tool ready for anything! Compared to thinner, more conventional styles, the Tools Cockring is a full half-inch tall to collar your throbbing rascal! Firm up your wood with a sex toy cock ring that looks like it means business! How A Cock Ring Works Cock rings are adult sex toys that tighten around the base of the cock and balls to reduce the circulation of blood. Blood flows into the penis through blood vessels at the organ’s core and out through veins nearer to the skin’s surface. Causing a restriction with a Titan Men Tools Cockring allows the blood to flow in, but not out as quickly. Trapping blood in the penis can make for more engorgement and greater sensitivity, create a firmer erection and may possibly delay ejaculation. For many, the Titan Men Tools Cockring looks very sexy and hot. How To Use This Cock Ring It is easiest to stretch the Titan Men Tools Cockring and slip it over your non-erect penis. As blood gets trapped inside, your erection will grow. Give your penis a break every 20 minutes or less. Blood trapped too long can lead to damaged capillaries and bruising. For the first-timer, go for 5 to 10 minutes with the cock enhancer ring on, then remove it. If you experience any discomfort, remove the ring. Keeping a Titan Men Tools Cockring clean is easy. Just wash with warm water and mild soap and pat dry. Or use Adam & Eve Toy Cleaner, available here at adamandeve.com. Don’t put any sex toys into storage until they are completely dry. The Titan Men Tools Cockring is great for couples who want to experiment a cock enhancer for a stiffer erection. Solo men can pop in their favorite sex DVD and feel a thick, powerful erection grow and thicken.

The First of Men

The First of Men

$17.95

Written by John Ferling, one of America's leading historians of the Revolutionary era, The First of Men offers an illuminating portrait of George Washington's life, with emphasis on his military and political career. Here is a riveting account that captures Washington in all his complexity, recounting not only Washington's familiar sterling qualities–courage, industry, ability to make difficult decisions, ceaseless striving for self-improvement, love of his family and loyalty to friends–but also his less well known character flaws. Indeed, as Ferling shows, Washington had to overcome many negative traits as he matured into a leader. The young Washington was accused of ingratitude and certain of his letters from this period read as if they were written by "a pompous martinet and a whining, petulant brat." As commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, he lost his temper more than once and indulged flatterers. Aaron Burr found him "a boring, colorless person." As president, he often believed the worst about individual officials. Ferling concludes that Washington's personality and temperament were those of "a self-centered and self-absorbed man, one who since youth had exhibited a fragile self-esteem." And yet he managed to realize virtually every grand design he ever conceived. Ferling's Washington is driven, fired by ambition, envy, and dreams of fame and fortune. Yet his leadership and character galvanized the American Revolution–probably no one else could have kept the war going until the master stroke at Yorktown–and helped the fledgling nation take, and survive, its first unsteady steps. This superb paperback makes available once again an unflinchingly honest and compelling biography of the father of our country.

This joint World Bank/VIZ Media series addresses global issues through manga graphic novels targeting teenagers. The first 3 volumes focus on poverty, HIV/AIDS, and the environment. But the series’ immediate appeal is the coming-of-age tale of orphaned teenager Rei, who dreams of becoming the greatest fighter in the world! Rei’s trainer takes the form of various animals and, much to Rei’s disappointment, strives to develop his student’s mind, heart, and spirit more than his fighting technique! Though the themes are grim, the pages are full of action, romance, and even humor. The guises Rei’s trainer assumes inevitably lead to misunderstandings and slapstick. Rei’s pride and ambition set him up for many a fall, but throughout the series, his good heart and inability to walk away from those in need makes him an engaging and likeable protagonist who will appeal to young men and women alike.

The guises Rei”s trainer assumes inevitably lead to misunderstandings and slapstick.Rei”s pride and ambition set him up for many a fall, but throughout the series, his good heart and inability to walk away from those in need makes him an engaging and likeable protagonist who will appeal to young men and women alike.

Lacking the romantic imagery of the 1745 uprising of supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Jacobite rebellion of 1715 has received far less attention from scholars. Yet the ’15, just eight years after the union of England and Scotland, was in fact a more significant threat to the British state. This book is the first thorough account of the Jacobite rebellion that might have killed the Act of Union in its infancy. Drawing on a substantial range of fresh primary resources in England, Scotland, and France, Daniel Szechi analyzes not only large and dramatic moments of the rebellion but also the smaller risings that took place throughout Scotland and northern England. He examines the complex reasons that led some men to rebel and others to stay at home, and he reappraises the economic, religious, social, and political circumstances that precipitated a Jacobite rising. Shedding new light on the inner world of the Jacobites, Szechi reveals the surprising significance of their widely supported but ultimately doomed rebellion.

Set against the backdrop of Georgian England with its peculiar mix of elegance, prosperity, progress, and squalor, the story of the First Fleet is one of courage, shortsightedness, tragedy, but above all, extraordinary resilience. Separated from loved ones and traveling in cramped conditions for the months-long journey to Botany Bay, the first European Australians suffered the most unbearable hardship upon arrival on Australian land, where a near famine dictated that rations be cut to the bone. Questions such as Why was the settlement of New South Wales proposed in the first place? and Who were the main players in a story that changed the world and ultimately forged the Australian nation? are answered using diaries, letters, and official records. Artfully reconstructing the experiences of these famous and infamous men and women of history, this book combines narrative skill with an eye for detail and an exceptional empathy with the people of the past.

1929

By 1929, the brief, brilliant career of Bix Beiderbecke–self-taught cornetist, pianist, and composer–had already become legend. From the summer of ’26 at Hudson Lake, Indiana, when his genius blazed forth with a strange, doomed incandescence, Bix’s carrer tragically reflected the chaotic impulses of a country suddenly awash in wealth, power, and a profound cynicism. Shy, elusive, inarticulate, Bix was beloved by both the raccoon-coated campus crowd and the men who nightly played alongside him. He is still celebrated in a yearly festival in his hometown of Davenport, Iowa. And that is where the novel begins, Davenport and the Bix Fest. Then it travels back in time to focus on the highlights of a meteoric career: a Capone-constrolld nightclub in 1926; the grueling cross-country tours with Paul Whiteman’s Sysphonic Jazz orchestra; the disastrous Whiteman trip to California to make the first all-color talkie musical; the stock market crash of 1929 that finds Bix in an asylum, victim of the era’s signature product, bootleg gin; and finally, Bix’s dying efforts to combine his piano compositions into a suite that would be the pinnacle of his life’s work and his evocation of his time and place. Colored by some of the age’s most popular characters–Maurice Ravel, Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Clara Bow–1929 brilliantly illuminates a period in history, personified in the gifted, compelling, and melancholy figure of Bix Beiderbecke.

1st Air Cavalry in Vietnam: The ‘First Team

$152.95

On 1 July 1965 the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) was officially activated and was ordered to Vietnam beginning 28 July 1965. In a matter of three and half weeks the newly formed division, with 16,000 men and 434 helicopters–Chinooks (CH-47s), Flying Cranes (CH-54s), Mohawks (OV-1s), UH-1s and OH-13s–was prepared to enter combat. Within 90 days of becoming the Army’s first airmobile division, the ‘First Team’ was in combat as the first fully committed division of the Vietnam War. On 10 October 1965, in Operation ‘Shiny Bayonet’, the First Team initiated its first brigade-size airmobile action against the enemy. The division would go on to take part in many more air assaults and play a leading role in defence against the Tet offensive, driving out the NVA and Viet Cong invaders from Hue and, in Operation ‘Pegasus’, relieving the 3,500 U.S. Marines and 2,100 ARVN soldiers besieged by nearly 20,000 enemy at Khe Sanh. On 1 May 1970, the ‘First Team’ was ‘First into Cambodia’ hitting what was previously a Communist sanctuary but the campaign had severe political repercussions for the Nixon Administration. Pressure was mounting to withdraw US forces from the war. Although there would be further assault operations, the war was beginning to wind down and 26 March 1971 officially marked the end of duties in Vietnam for the 1st Cavalry Division, although it was only on 5 May 1971 that the colours moved from Vietnam to Fort Hood, Texas.

2231: Mars Against Empire

$27.99

An omnibus including the first four books in the Defense Command series, 2231: Mars Against Empire covers the outset of the Martian War. Earth”s former colonists on Mars have built their ”Imperium”, and now choose to launch a war against the Earth Empire for dominance of the solar system. In the process, they run head-first into the women and men of Defense Command. But even as the first shots are fired, political instability is taking root in the Empire, with the Emperor and the Parliament struggling for dominance. The Egesta crisis is also beginning, and that debacle will draw Defense Command into the worst peacekeeping disaster in Imperial history. It is thus a very complicated year, and narrating these stories, then-Commodore Ken Barron pulls no punches. With is wry (often lame) sense of humor, he candidly recounts the adventure, the romance, and the pain, producing what many feel is the definitive account of the period.

 27 Men Out

27 Men Out

There have been only fifteen perfect games pitched in the modern era of baseball: The great Cy Young fittingly hurled the first one, in 1904, and Randy Johnson pitched the last one, in May 2004. In between, some great and famous pitchers — Sandy Koufax, Catfish Hunter, Jim Bunning, and Don Larsen — performed the feat, as did those lesser-known, like Charlie Robertson and Len Barker. Fifteen in 160,000 games: The odds are staggering. In 27 Men Out, popular historian Michael Coffey offers an expansive look at these unsurpassable pitching performances. Here you’ll find play-by-play accounts of each of the fifteen perfect games and expert assessments of those who pitched them. Along the way, Coffey goes beyond the box scores to provide fascinating details about how these games unfolded, as well as compelling anecdotes about all of the key players — from Koufax’s controversial holdout with Don Drysdale to Mike Witt’s victimization by the baseball commissioner to Dennis Martinez’s struggle up from an impoverished Nicaraguan childhood. A must-have for baseball fans, historians, and statisticians alike, 27 Men Out is an exciting new benchmark in sports literature.

Launched in February of 1931, The SS President Coolidge was built by Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co in Newport News, Virginia USA. Prior to World War II, she was operated by the American President Lines as a luxury liner providing trans-pacific passage and commercial service. Passengers had a luxurious experience on the ship with spacious staterooms and lounges, private telephones, two saltwater swimming pools, a barbers shop, beauty salon, gymnasium and soda fountain. In 1941, as war time activitiesincreased, the US War Department began to use the President Coolidge for occasional voyages to Honolulu and Manila but it wasn’t until after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 5, 1941 that she was fully commissioned as a transport ship for reinforcing garrisons in the Pacific. She was stripped of her finery, painted gun-metal grey and by early 1942; the SS President Coolidge had begun her days servicing the South West Pacific. As a troop carrier, she was never intended to see any action. In her first few months of service, her ports of call included Melbourne, Wellington, Auckland, Bora Bora, and Suva. On October 6, she set sail from her home port of San Francisco, California for New Caledonia and Espiritu Santo. On October 26, 1942, the SS Coolidge, fearing Japanese submarines and unaware of the mine fields, attempted to enter the harbor through the largest and most obvious channel, a friendly mine struck the ship at the engine room and moments later, a second mine hit her near the stern. The captain, knowing that he was going to lose the ship, ran her aground and ordered troops to abandon ship. Not believing the ship would sink, troops were told to leave all of their belongings behind under the impression that they would conduct salvage operationsover the next few days. Over the course of the next 90 minutes, 4,998 men got safely off of the wreck and to shore before she listed too heavily on her side, sank, and slid down the slope into the channel. She n

A Blue Tale and Other Stories

A Blue Tale and Other Stories

$15.45

These three stories, the last of Yourcenar’s fiction to be translated into English, were written between 1927 and 1930 when the author was in her mid-twenties. A Blue Tale is a sensual, fantastic attempt to describe reality in tones of blue. Drawing on an ancient oral tradition, Yourcenar offers a tale of the credulity of men who are lured by riches – in this case, sapphires. The First Evening was originally written, though left unfinished, by Yourcenar’s father, Michel de Crayencour. He exerted a strong influence on his daughter’s life and on the early stages of her writing career. Yourcenar revised and completed this tale depicting a jaded French intellectual and man-of-the-world whose wedding night is disrupted by shocking news, and it was published under her name after her father’s death. The Evil Spell , like Memoirs of Hadrian, is set in the Mediterranean, a physical and spiritual place that fired Yourcenar’s literary imagination. The tale reveals Yourcenar’s fascination with the occult, a realm she would find herself attracted to more than once later on – most notably at a crucial turning point in The Abyss.

A Brief History of Fighting Ships

$6.43

Surveying the turbulent years of the Napoleonic wars, 1793 to 1815, this masterly chronicle tells the stirring story of the Ship of the Line–the vast, beautiful, and deadly battleships that played a vital role in that titanic conflict. The text adeptly explains the ships’ construction and armaments, the daily life of the men who served, and the problems faced by commanders of the time, in battles that include the Glorious First of June, the Battle of the Nile, and, of course, Trafalgar. A Catalogue Raisonne of Scientific Instruments from the Louvain School (1550-1600)

$110.16

This object-based study concentrates on scientific instruments made in Louvain between c. 1530 and c. 1600, a period in which the university fell from the peak of its importance into a state of decline. The instruments are characterised by elaborate decoration and by numerous technical innovations. The book comprises two parts: an introduction followed by a catalogue raisonne of almost ninety instruments from the Louvain masters, both signed and unsigned ones. The introduction outlines the circumstances of the foundation of this ‘Louvain school of instrument makers’, which entailed the merging of an intellectual center (based in the university) and a material culture (based in the workshops). A similar symbiosis occurred elsewhere in Europe, but never on the scale of Louvain. The presence of the Spanish Court in Brussels around 1540-1550 helped to provide the workshops with important commissions. Their role as a Maecenas is also discussed. The most important instrument makers were Gerard Mercator, Michael Piquer, Gualterus Arsenius, Adrian Descrolieres and Adrian Zeelst. Little was previously known about these men – apart perhaps from Mercator – and even less about the output of their workshops. This book attempts to present for the first time a comprehensive survey of these workshops and how they may have influenced one another.

A Century of Forest Resources Education at Penn State: Serving Our Forests, Waters, Wildlife, and Wood Industries

A Century of Forest Resources Education at Penn State: Serving Our Forests, Waters, Wildlife, and Wood Industries

$86.85

Forestry education in Pennsylvania has a long, proud tradition, having begun earlier than in most other states. By 1897, twenty land-grant colleges, including Penn State, had introduced the subject of forestry, typically in botany courses. Professional forestry education in Pennsylvania originated in 1903, when the Pennsylvania State Forest Academy was founded at Mont Alto, and expanded in 1907 when the baccalaureate degree program started at the Pennsylvania State College. For the 100th anniversary of the School of Forest Resources in 2007, A Century of Forest Resources Education at Penn State reviews progress in the Schools academic programs and facilities and examines the accomplishments of some of our more interesting and prominent graduates and faculty. The events that led up to the founding are described first, featuring several pioneering men and their sole female peer. The principal developments of the initial fifty years then provide background for the ensuing expansion of the faculty, facilities, administrative organization, and graduates of the last five decades. Fascinating little-known tidbitssuch as students hanging officials in effigy, an interloping bear in a classroom, administrative battles, and a tale of the original Nittany Lionare interspersed among descriptive factual data.

A Christmas Garland (Dodo Press)

$11.44

Sir Henry Maximilian Beerbohm (1872-1956) was an English parodist and caricaturist. His first book, The Works of Max Beerbohm, was published in 1896. Having been interviewed by George Bernard Shaw himself, in 1898 he followed Shaw as drama critic for the Saturday Review, on whose staff he remained until 1910. From 1935 onwards, he was an occasional radio broadcaster, talking about cars and carriages and music halls for the BBC. His wit is shown often enough in his caricatures but his letters contain a carefully blended humour-a gentle admonishing of the excesses of the day-whilst remaining firmly tongue in cheek. Beerbohm’s best known works are: Yet Again (1909), A Christmas Garland (1912), a parody of literary styles, and Seven Men (1919), which includes Enoch Soames, the tale of a poet who makes a deal with the devil to find out how posterity will remember him. In 1911 he wrote Zuleika Dobson, or, An Oxford Love Story, his only novel. He also wrote And Even Now (1920).

Anthony Powell’s universally acclaimed epic encompasses a four-volume panorama of twentieth century London. Hailed by Time as brilliant literary comedy as well as a brilliant sketch of the times, A Dance to the Music of Time opens just after World War I. Amid the fever of the 1920s and the first chill of the 1930s, Nick Jenkins and his friends confront sex, society, business, and art. In the second volume they move to London in a whirl of marriage and adulteries, fashions and frivolities, personal triumphs and failures. These books provide an unsurpassed picture, at once gay and melancholy, of social and artistic life in Britain between the wars (Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.). The third volume follows Nick into army life and evokes London during the blitz. In the climactic final volume, England has won the war and must now count the losses. Four very different young men on the threshold of manhood dominate this opening volume of A Dance to the Music of Time. The narrator, Jenkins–a budding writer–shares a room with Templer, already a passionate womanizer, and Stringham, aristocratic and reckless. Widermerpool, as hopelessly awkward as he is intensely ambitious, lurks on the periphery of their world. Amid the fever of the 1920s and the first chill of the 1930s, these four gain their initiations into sex, society, business, and art. Considered a masterpiece of modern fiction, Powell’s epic creates a rich parorama of life in England between the wars. 1886. A noted novelist of more than 70 books. After her husband and two sons died of yellow fever, she moved to New York with her three daughters, $5.00, and faith in God, to start a new life. She published her first novel, Jan Vedder’s Wife, which was an immediate success at the age of 53. A great advocate of Women’s Rights, she was one of the earliest activists who campaigned for equal pay for women who performed equal jobs as men. Remember the Alamo is her best remembered work. A Daughter of Fife begins: On the shore of a little landlocked haven, into which the gulls and terms bring tidings of the sea, stands the fishing hamlet of Pittenloch. It is in the East Neuk o’ Fife, that bit of old Scotland fronted with a girdle of little towns, of which Pittenloch is one of the smallest and the most characteristic. Some of the cottages stand upon the sands, others are grouped in a steep glen, and a few surmount the lofty sea-washed rocks.

 A Discovery of Strangers

A Discovery of Strangers

$16.88

A Discovery of Strangers tells of the meeting of two civilizations – the first encounter of the nomadic Dene people with Europeans – in an imaginative reconstruction of John Franklin’s first map-making expedition in 1819–21 in what is now the Northwest Territories. At the heart of the novel is a love story between twenty-two-year-old midshipman Robert Hood, the Franklin expedition’s artist, and a fifteen-year-old Yellowknife girl known to the British as Greenstockings. A national bestseller, published also in Germany and China, Wiebe’s first novel in eleven years and his twelfth work of fiction won him his second Governor General’s Award for Fiction at the age of sixty, over strong competition from Margaret Atwood and Alice Munro. It is a story of love, murder, greed and passion in an unforgiving Arctic landscape. French-Canadian voyageurs paddle the small British expedition into the land of the Yellowknives to search for the fabled Northwest Passage. While this trip would not prove as disastrous as Franklin’s third expedition, nevertheless more than half his men did not survive the harsh conditions. The long winter stopover allows for interchange between the cultures. When the son of a Lancashire clergyman and the daughter of a native elder fall in love, they devise a language of their own to cross their wordless divide. Hood will not survive to see the birth of his daughter, perishing in 1821 in an attempt to reach Greenstockings’s band 450 kilometres south. Nor will the Yellowknives survive much longer: within twenty years, they will be all but wiped out by a smallpox epidemic brought by the white men. The novel is the work of a poetic mind, written in several voices: ofthe British explorers, of the Tetsot’ine people – named Yellowknife by the strangers – and, most unexpected of all, of the animals that live on the Barrenlands. Wiebe climbs inside the characters, bringing them and the North to life. Most Canadians have never seen that landscape. Yet I

The shocking stories in Confessions of an Economic Hit Man were just the tip of the iceberg. The hidden web of multinational corruption is more pervasive — and far more sinister — than Confessions revealed. This new book shows how corporations, governments, individuals, financial institutions, and quasi-governmental agencies enrich corporations and the elite while impoverishing masses of people and economically enslaving entire countries. Combining first-hand accounts from economic hit men with reports from journalists and other investigators, A Game As Old As Empire exposes the financial shell game being played all over the world. It shows how the system really works, with detailed examples, facts, and figures that underscore the fact that business as usual for the elite carries a heavy price for the rest of the world. It then offers constructive suggestions showing what ordinary citizens can do to confront and change this destructive web of control. This ten-CD release from The Audio Partners is published simultaneously with the hardcover edition of the title from Berrett-Koehler Publishers.

Winch has written the first full-length biography of James Forten, a hero of African American history and one of the most remarkable men in 19th-century America. Born into a free black family in 1766, Forten served in the Revolutionary War as a teenager. By 1810 he had earned the distinction of being the leading sailmaker in Philadelphia. Soon after, Forten emerged as a leader in Philadelphia’s black community and was active in a wide range of reform activities. Especially prominent in national and international antislavery movements, he served as vice-president of the American Anti-Slavery Society and became close friends with William Lloyd Garrison, to whom he lent money to start up the Liberator. His family were all active abolitionists and a granddaughter, Charlotte Forten, published a famous diary of her experiences teaching ex-slaves in South Carolina’s Sea Islands during the Civil War. This is the first serious biography of Forten, who stands beside Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Martin Luther King, Jr., in the pantheon of African Americans who fundamentally shaped American history.

 A Glassful of Letters

A Glassful of Letters

$42.79

Evelyn Conlon’s last collection of short stories, Taking Scarlet as a Real Colour was praised by Publishers Weekly as radiant…a first-rate collection full of original insights and characters , and the Irish Times called her a genuinely exploratory writer….Her work is enticingly original . In A Glassful of Letters Conlon tackles emigration, working mothers, non-working mothers, Republican prisoners, the inhumanity of big business, adultery, and a lot more. Employing a dramatic narrative structure in which much of the story takes place in a series of letters, and set partly in Ireland, partly in New York, this is a very modern Irish novel, one which takes on the recent (and on-going) unprecedented self re-examination that has been going on in Ireland since the late 80′s. The men and women of this novel are a diverse but tightly knit group, related to each other by family ties or by the simple fact of living on the same Dublin street. Conlon skillfully interlinks their stories to reflect the pressures — and pleasures — generated by rapidly changing social values. And at the heart of it all is the quiet bravery of one woman.

A Grammar of the English Language

A Grammar of the English Language

$5.75

A Grammar of the English Language provides a fascinating snapshot of the language and grammar of the early nineteenth century. It was a controversial book, first published in 1818 in New York and in 1819 in London. The author, William Cobbett (1763-1835), was a champion of the poor who had taught himself to read and write. His radicalism brought him into conflict with the authorities on many occasions. He reserved a special kind of venom for politicians, men of letters and for Fellows of English Colleges, who live by the sweat of other people’s brows. Here, he criticizes these men for their poor command of English. Written in the form of letters and lessons to his fourteen-year-old son, this is the most colorful and entertaining treatment of the subject ever published. It gives advice on syntax and etymology, including false grammar taken from Dr. Johnson’s writing, errors and nonsense in a king’s speech, and six lessons, intended to prevent Statesmen from using false grammar. This edition includes a new Introduction by Lord Hattersley, which gives the book a modern perspective.

A Heart for Any Fate: R.B. Russell

$11.61

Born in 1861, eldest in a while, middle-class Southern family that lost everything material in the American civil war, Richard Russell grew up consumed with ambition to make a name for himself. His dream was to found an outstanding family and to hold the three highest offices in Georgia: Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Governor, and United States senator. In striving for these ambitions, he married twice and ran for public office seventeen times. Although elected to lesser offices, he lost races for chief justice, governor, Congress, and the U.S. Senate. He was elected to the first Georgia Court of Appeals in 1906 and to the Supreme Court as chief justice in 1922. His first wife, Minnie Tyler, died in childbirth in 1886, leaving him bereft, but five years later he married again. With Ina Dillard he formed an exemplary marriage relationship that produced fifteen children, thirteen of whom survived to become responsible adults, credits to effective parenting. The eldest son, Richard Brevard Russell Jr., fulfilled the gubernatorial and senatorial dreams of his father, becoming governor of Georgia in 1931 and U.S. senator from Georgia in 1933, when he was thirty-five years old. He served thirty-seven years in the United States Senate and became Georgia’s premier statesman of the twentieth century. Thanks to their father’s emphasis on education and his willingness to pay for it, the Russell children studied law, medicine, the ministry and teaching and became respected professionals in their careers. The glory and difficulty of patriarchy come clear in this story of social and familial structures that both restricted and strengthened conscientious middle and upper-class white men of thepost-Civil War South.

 A History of Chicago

A History of Chicago

$30.67

The first major history of Chicago ever written, A History of Chicago covers the city s great history over two centuries, from 1673 to 1893. Originally conceived as a centennial history of Chicago, the project became, under the guidance of renowned historian Bessie Louise Pierce, a definitive, three-volume set describing the city s growth from its humble frontier beginnings to the horrors of the Great Fire, the construction of some of the world s first skyscrapers, and the opulence of the 1893 World s Fair. Pierce and her assistants spent over forty years transforming historical records into an inspiring human story of growth and survival. Rich with anecdotal evidence and interviews with the men and women who made Chicago great, all three volumes will now be available for the first time in years. A History of Chicago will be essential reading for anyone who wants to know this great city and its place in America. With this rescue of its history from the bright, impressionable newspapermen and from the subscription-volumes, Chicago builds another impressive memorial to its coming of age, the closing of its first century of progress.
