Film Remakes As Ritual And Disguise

Film Remakes As Ritual And Disguise

$41.74

The first full-length history of the remake in cinema, Film Remakes as Ritual and Disguise is also the first book to explore how and why these stories are told. Anat Zanger focuses on contemporary retellings of three particular tales-- Joan of Arc, Carmen, and Psycho --to reveal what she calls the remake's rituals of disguise. Joan of Arc, Zanger demonstrates, later appears as the tough, androgynous Ripley in the blockbuster Alien series and the God-ridden Bess in Lars Von Trier's Breaking the Waves. Ultimately, these remake chains offer evidence of the archetypes of our own age, cultural fingerprints that are reflective of society's own preferences and politics. Underneath the redundancy of the remake, Zanger shows, lies our collective social memory. Indeed, at its core the lowly remake represents a primal attempt to gain immortality, to triumph over death--playing at movie theaters seven days a week, 365 days a year. Addressing the wider theoretical implications of her argument with sections on contemporary film issues such as trauma, jouissance, and censorship, Film Remakes as Ritual and Disguise is an insightful addition to current debates in film theory and cinema history.

Joan of Arc

$2.69

Joan of Arc is one of the most enigmatic figures of history, and interest in the eccentric French maiden has never ceased since she was burnt on the stake in 1431. Siobhan Nash-Marshall tells her lively story, and interprets her life from the spiritual point of view.

 Joan of Arc (1930)

Joan of Arc (1930)

$142.99

She was so young when she heard a Voice speaking to her of the faith & its observance, and gave her an order that she should seek the uncrowned King of France, dispossessed by his foes, and rescue him & crown him at Rheims. She told no one, but turned to a new piety as she grew into womanhood, cherishing the poor, and at her prayers continually till her devotion seemed ridiculous to those around her. And she had vowed her virginity to God so long as it should Him please, but on this also she held her peace. Such is the beginning of the story of Joan of Arc.

Joan of Arc - French Heroine and Saint (Biography)

Joan of Arc – French Heroine and Saint (Biography)

$28.71

Joan of Arc – French Heroine and Saint is the biography of Joan of Arc, a 15th century saint and national heroine of France. She was the only person ever recorded to have commanded the entire army of a nation at the age of seventeen; she was captured by the English and tried by an ecclesiastical court led by Bishop Pierre Cauchon, an English partisan, the court convicted her of heresy and she was burned at the stake by the English when she was nineteen years old. Twenty-four years later, the Vatican reviewed the decision of the ecclesiastical court, found her innocent, and declared her a martyr. She was beatified in 1909 and canonized as a saint in 1920. Joan asserted that she had visions from God that told her to recover her homeland from English domination late in the Hundred Years” War. Joan of Arc – French Heroine and Saint is highly recommended for those interested in the history and story of Joan of Arc.

Martin of Tours: Soldier, Bishop, Saint

Martin of Tours: Soldier, Bishop, Saint

$12.94

Regine Pernoud, the highly acclaimed French medieval historian, and author of best-selling titles on Joan of Arc and Hildegard of Bingen, as well as the book Those Terrible Middle Ages, presents an enlighteneing biography of one of France’s most revered saints, and man whose impact on France, and Europe, continues to this days. Martin of Tours lived in the 4th century, at that great turning point in history when the Roman Empire fell and the Church took charge in the West. He left a successful career in the military life to become a monk, and later a Bishop who traveled extensively, evangelizing the countryside and creatiung that particular sort of community life in a village that is now called a parish. More than four hundred towns and some four thousand parished in France are named after St. Martin. The term chapel is derived from the actual church where pilgrims venerate Martin’s cape or cloak. Martin of Tours was a servant of the common man, as well as the nobility, and a very humble man who responded to the needs of his times and and opened up vast perspectives for ordinary, everyday life. Given the crisis of the Christian Faith now facing France and all of Europe, the story of this solider and great apostle and Christian evangelist is a timely one indeed.
