When this popular prison drama was released in 1994, some critics complained that the movie was too long (142 minutes) to sustain its story. Those complaints miss the point, because the passage of time is crucial to this story about patience, the squeaky wheels of justice, and the growth of a life-long friendship. Only when the film reaches its final, emotionally satisfying scene do you fully unde…

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest -

$34.99

With an insane asylum standing in for everyday society, Milos Forman’s 1975 film adaptation of Ken Kesey’s novel is a comically sharp indictment of the Establishment urge to conform. Playing crazy to avoid prison work detail, manic free spirit Randle P. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) is sent to the state mental hospital for evaluation. There he encounters a motley crew of mostly voluntary inmates, including cowed mama’s boy Billy (Brad Dourif) and silent Native American Chief Bromden (Will Sampson), presided over by the icy Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher). Ratched and McMurphy recognize that each is the other’s worst enemy: an authority figure who equates sanity with correct behavior, and a misfit who is charismatic enough to dismantle the system simply by living as he pleases. McMurphy proceeds to instigate group insurrections large and small, ranging from a restorative basketball game to an unfettered afternoon boat trip and a tragic after-hours party with hookers and booze. Nurse Ratched, however, has the machinery of power on her side to ensure that McMurphy will not defeat her. Still, McMurphy’s message to live free or die is ultimately not lost on one inmate, revealing that escape is still possible even from the most oppressive conditions. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi

1972: A Novel of Ireland’s Unfinished Revolution

$12.95

Praise for Morgan Llywelyn 1921 Llywelyn continues her magnificent multivolume saga chronicling the twentieth-century struggle for Irish independence. As in 1916, she masterfully interweaves historical figures and events with fictional ones, providing both a panoramic and an intimate view. — Booklist It is a seamless and beautiful work that depicts the struggle of the Irish people to form a nation. . . . 1921 is an artful blend of fictional and historical characters that meet and interact with such forcefulness and directness that the reader is convinced that if history didn’t happen this way, it should have; for Llywelyn’s work is not the skeletal work one normally associates with history, it is fully fleshed and rich with life. . . . This is a wonderful work of history, art, and storytelling. – El Paso Times 1916 The politics and factionalism behind the Rising are a tangled web indeed, but Llywelyn unravels them skillfully. Even those who know the story well will be surprised and rewarded by the way she brings back to life a group of brave men who went nobly to their deaths. – The Philadelphia Inquirer She weaves the tapestry of her story with intelligence and skill, and gives us access to a period when the bullets flew and patriots gave their lives for the ideal of freedom – San Diego Union-Tribune The novel’s . . . easy, gripping style will enthrall casual readers with what is Llywelyn’s best work yet. – Publishers Weekly (starred review)

5150 – One Who Flew Into the Cuckoo’s Nest

$24.95

A true story about personal journey in the following domains: Psychiatric Hospital(s), DID, Borderline PD, PTSD, Schizoaffective Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Transsexualism, and Infantilism. First time a book is published that resonates with the psychiatric hospital progress notes. More FEEDBACK: I finished reading the book last night at 03: 12 AM. I could not let go of it. I could not close my laptop. I went out to meet some friends but hurried back. This time it’s a winner: taut, tense prose; a plot as captivating as any thriller’s; a real-life story that reads like a nightmare and that ends in personal redemption. Couched in a lean and muscular text, all the important themes are here: self-discovery, one against the many, iconoclastic rebel faces down the system, justice for all, mental illness as a mechanism for social coercion. What a ride! What a treat! Brilliant. Sam Vaknin Ph.D.

The AT-6 Texan advanced trainer, built by North American, is one of the most widely used aircraft in history. Also known as the pilot maker , 15,495 Texans were built between 1938 and 1945. The USAAF. procured 10,057 AT-6s; others went to the Navy as SNJs and to more than 30 Allied nations. Most AAF fighter pilots trained in AT-6s prior to graduation from flying school. Many of the Spitfire and Hurricane pilots in the Battle of Britain trained in Canada in Harvards, the British version of the AT-6. To comply with neutrality laws, U.S. built Harvards were flown north to the border and were pushed across. In 1948, Texans still in USAF service were redesignated as T-6s. To meet an urgent need for close air support of ground forces in the Korean Conflict, T-6s flew mosquito missions spotting enemy troops and guns and marking them with smoke rockets for attack by fighter-bombers. More than 360 T-6s are still flying. Dimensions: 10.75 L x 15 W x 6 H

Arctic Stories

$7.95

Acclaimed Inuit storyteller Michael Kusugak weaves a tapestry of tales about ten-year-old Agatha and her accidental heroism in the high Arctic of 1958. The first of Agatha’s stories is based on one of Kusugak’s real life experiences, when an eerie, black airship flew over Chesterfield Inlet in 1958. A sleepy Agatha saves the community from the monstrous flying object. In the second story, Agatha notices the playful antics of the winter ravens and takes an interest in the many migrating birds. As the seasons change, she begins to favor more beautiful and peaceful birds of spring, until the ravens return. The third of Agatha’s stories takes place in the fall when Agatha is sent to school in Chesterfield Inlet, an English-speaking community south of her home. During an afternoon of skating, Agatha rescues a show-off priest, who has inadvertently demonstrated the danger of thin ice. The three Agatha stories resonate with the nostalgia and affection of Kusugak’s childhood memories.

B-17G Liberty Bell 1/62 Scale Model Aircraft

$135.95

On September 9, 1944 the 390th Bomb Group attacked a target in Dusseldorf, Germany and suffered its second largest single mission loss of the war. Over the target just prior to bomb release, one of the low squadron B-17s was hit in the Bomb bay by flak. The 1000 lb. bombs exploded and nine of the twelve aircraft in the squadron were instantly destroyed or knocked out of formation.Six of the nine went down over the target, one flew two hours on a single engine and landed at Paris, another crippled plane landed in Belgium and the other struggled back to its home base and landed long after the other thirty nine B-17s had returned from the mission. The one that came home was Liberty Belle, she went on to complete 64 combat missions before being salvaged on February 18, 1945. The Liberty Foundation s B-17G (SN 44-85734) has an interesting post-war history. Originally sold on June 25, 1947 as scrap to Esperado Mining Co. of Altus, OK, it sold again later that year to Pratt Whitney for $2,700. Pratt Whitney operated the B-17 from November 19, 1947 to 1967 as a heavily modified test bed for their P W T-34 and T-64 turboprop engines. It became a 5-engine aircraft , having the powerful prototype engine mounted on the nose! The aircraft was flown single-engine , with all four radial engines feathered during test flights. Following this life as a test platform, it was donated in the late 1960s to the Connecticut Aeronautical Historic Association in East Hartford. Unfortunately, it was heavily damaged on October 3, 1979 in a tornado, in which another aircraft was thrown onto the B-17 s mid-section. The wreck was stored in the New England Air Museum, CT from 1981 until 1987.

B-47 Stratojet Pilot’s Flight Operating Instructions

$49.11

The Air Force”s first all-jet strategic bomber, the swept-wing Boeing B-47 Stratojet had a range of 3,500 nautical miles and a payload capacity of 20,000 pounds. It served as the mainstay of Strategic Air Command in the 1950s into the mid 1960s. The B-47 was an outgrowth of WWII research and development efforts, and the prototype aircraft first flew in December of 1947. The unique six-jet design featured twin engine pods on the wing near the fuselage, and one outboard. It also incorporated an elegant bicycle-type landing gear with two-wheel struts on the forward and aft fuselage and outrigger wheels. In 1956, over 1300 B-47s and 250 RB-47s were on alert. It was the high water mark for the aircraft, which was fully supplanted by the B-52 by 1967. This B-47 pilot”s flight operating handbook was originally produced by the USAF. It has been slightly reformatted but is reproduced here in its entirety. It provides a fascinating view inside the cockpit of one of history”s great planes.

The city had two of the greatest hitters in baseball history-George Sisler and Rogers Hornsby-and one of the game”s most influential executives-Branch Rickey. Twenty-one members of the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown played baseball in St. Louis during these years. Beyond Courage: Air Sea Rescue by Walrus Squadrons in the Adriatic, Mediterranean and Tyrrhenian Seas 1942-1945

$264.36

This new book covers the adventures of 283, 284, 293 and 294 Walrus Squadrons, operating from North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Sardinia. The pilots, like their counterparts in England, knew of the dangers of landing on the sea. It was a daunting task attempting to rescue downed airmen as they had often to operate in bad weather, and near hostile coasts. Airmen who were bobbing about in dinghies, or even just in their Mae West life jackets, were difficult to locate. Rescues from the cold sea needed to be speedy affairs, especially of those survivors not in dinghies, and the Walrus aircrew were always aware that time was of the essence. Moreover, rescues near a hostile shore often resulted in gunfire from German or Italian gunners. Missions were always treacherous. Many Walrus pilots have added personal recollections to the narrative and so too have some of those airmen who were rescued. As well as RAF and SAAF airmen, there were numerous USAAF units involved in the air war over the Mediterranean and Italy, and Norman has been in contact with several Americans whose lives were saved by these gallant men who flew the Walrus amphibian single-engined biplane. Men who knew only too well that to pick up more than two or three aim en generally meant a hard sea-borne taxi ride back to base, which conditions never guaranteed. The stories of these rescues gives one a sense of sincere pride in the men who daily risked their lives to save others from a very hostile environment.

Caddy Daze – A Teen’s Odyssey Across the 1970s

$49.11

Caddy Daze – A Teen”s Odyssey across the 1970s, recalls the summers the members of The Clique toted golf bags at a country club in Westchester, N.Y. This memoir is funny, iconoclastic. One minute you encounter crazed golfers throwing clubs, the next rival rockers and disco babies drag-racing. The scenes are fueled by classic rock and the humor we reveled in. The language is often raw, punctuated by ethnic expressions, but at other times erudite. The caddies and members? Oddballs all, but memorable. Presiding over us? The caddy master, educated at the school of hard-knocks. Caddy Daze also tours Westchester: famed Glen Island Casino and Rye Playland, the spots where German spies met, cannonballs flew and headless horsemen haunted, and mystery-cloaked Albinoland. You join us as we wander its roads encountering beer, women, shamans and dope. Meantime, the tension between the members and caddies builds to a final catharsis that threatens to land us all in jail.

Cheating Death

$15.95

That was the pilots” creed. They flew low and slow, at treetop level, at night, in monsoons, and in point-blank range of enemy guns and missiles. They accepted missions no one else wanted, and they were the heroes other pilots prayed for when shot down. Flying the World War II-vintage Douglas A-1 Skyraider, a single-engine, propeller-driven relic in a war of fast movers — that is, jets — those intrepid Air Force pilots flew one of the most dangerous missions of the Vietnam War, helping rescue thousands of downed Air Force and Navy pilots. With a flashback memory and a style all his own, former Air Force Captain George J. Marrett depicts some of the most compelling aerial combat of any war, rendering the people, places, and battles with a unique blend of warts-and-all clarity, heart-pounding passion, and mordant wit.

Classic Lionel Trains 1900-1969

$19.53

From 1900 through the late-1950s, Lionel went from a wooden cheese box on wheels to expensive toy trains that flew off shelves at the height of the Great Depression to one of the world’s most recognizable brand names. In the 1960s, the company found itself in a fight for its life; only a buyout from General Mills would save the name from relegation to the dust heap of time. More than 80 modern color photographs help break Lionel’s classic rags-to-riches-to-rags period into five distinct eras, and a fascinating history examines the design and marketing of the company’s most significant — and dubious — products, placing them in the context of contemporary competition, real-life railroads, and world affairs.

Countryman

$7.72

After nearly a decade of gestation, Willie Nelson’s long-lost, and first, reggae set is at last complete. The seed of this project took root in late 1995, sprung from the mind of famed producer Don Was. Nelson and his manager Mark Rothbaum flew to Jamaica to meet with Island Records president and founder Chris Blackwell. Don had been speaking with both Blackwell and Nelson about the prospect of creating a reggae-infused country album and both men were intrigued. Blackwell was the ideal collaborator. Not only was he the person who introduced rock audiences to the world of reggae but likewise introduced them to Bob Marley. As a versatile, well-connected music aficionado, he could realize this marriage of country and reggae the way few others could. In fact, the two genres are compatible in many ways, and not as distant stylistically as one might initially imagine. Toots Hibbert proved it with his triumphant version of Country Roads and the renown reggae group the Melodians were the first to turn the gospel/bluegrass classic Rivers of Babylon, (also previously covered by Willie) into a full-on reggae classic. Perhaps it s not a coincidence that reggae is sometimes referred to as Jamaica s country music, being that both forms have drawn similar lyrical content from everyday matters and share a foundation in spiritual and gospel music. Countryman is Willie s impassioned tribute to the upstroke sound of Jamaica, an irie voyage to the land of dub and dreadlocks. Willie takes a handful of his own classics and filters them through a reggae prism, peppering them with his nylon acoustic guitar, pedal steel, dobro, harmonica and the familiar comforts of country, while bringing drums and bass to the forefront, yard style. So, after a journey lasting over a decade, Willie s Jamaican vision at last sees the bright light of day. While it s just one in a long line of hyphenated hybrid projects the versatile genius has created over the years, this Co

Cromwell Dixon

$10.09

Hailed as a mechanical genius in 1907 at the age of 13, teenage inventor Cromwell Dixon built and flew airships in Ohio before signing on with the famous Glenn Curtiss in New York and flying the world”s first airplanes. At age 19, Dixon became the first pilot in history to fly over the Continental Divide. He made the landmark flight from Helena, Montana, in 1911 before a sudden crash took his life three days later in Spokane, Washington. In a richly detailed foreword, Jeff Berry, great-nephew of Cromwell Dixon, reveals family stories about Dixon, including how he built his own roller coaster, two motor-driven bicycles, and, at the age of 15, a pedal-powered airship known as the Skycycle. Berry also shares never-before-seen Dixon family photographs. Like the tale of Icarus, Dixon”s story is one of great daring, accomplishment, and tragedy.

DC-3 American Airlines 1/72 Scale Model Aircraft

$118.05

The Douglas DC-3, first flew on December 17, 1935, is a fixed-wing, propeller-driven aircraft whose speed and range revolutionized air transport in the 1930s and 1940s. Many names and numbers were assigned to the DC-3. England labeled it the Dakota or Dak. American pilots, during World War II, called it the Skytrain, Skytrooper, Doug, or Gooney Bird. The U.S. militarys official titles were C-47, C-53, C-117, and R4D. The airlines called it The Three. Of all the names the affectionate title Gooney Bird lingers on. The D-13 had a lasting impact on the airline industry and World War II. It was generally regarded as one of the most significant transport aircraft ever made. The D-3 was intended at the height of the depression and in the infancy of the Airline Industry by Douglas Aircraft Company. It carried 34 passengers in more comfort than previous airliners. D-3, a much faster, more efficient and safer airplane, was purchased by many airlines all around the world. Production was diverted during World War II to the C-47 military version and many civilian airliners were converted to the military requirements for use during the war. After the war, most of the DC-3s and C-47s were returned to civilian and commercial use and others were sold to allied air forces around the world. The DC-3 once again was carrying paid passengers and was still in service carrying passengers in the 1970s with a few airlines. Today the DC-3s are relegated to aircraft museums, graveyards and occasionally a charter outfit still carrying cargo in them. Dimensions: 11 L x 6 W x 2.75 H

Daron CJR1048F2R F6F-5 Hellcat US Navy

$101.35

The date was September 1, 1943 when the Hellcat first saw action against the Japanese when fighters off the USS Independence (CVL-22) shot down a snooping seaplane. After which at 23rd of November, Hellcats engaged Japanese aircraft over Tarawa, shooting down a claimed 30 Mitsubishi Zeros for the loss of one F6F. On November 11, 1943, Hellcats were engaged in day-long fights with many Japanese aircraft including A6M Zeros, claiming more than 100 victories while losing few F6Fs over Rabaul, New Britain. The Thach Weave had developed into a formation tactic by that time. Each time an enemy fighter made a run at a section of US fighters, the pursued Hellcats would break towards the opposing formation that would cross over and force the Japanese to break off or expose themselves to the Hellcats weapons. The wingman tactics started which are still used to this day, allowing less maneuverable US aircraft such as the Hellcat to deal with much more nimble Japanese opponents. Hellcats were involved in practically all engagements with Japanese air power from that point onward. Navy and Marine F6Fs flew 66,530 combat sorties (45% of all fighter sorties of the war, 62,386 sorties were flown from aircraft carriers) and destroyed 5,163 enemy aircraft (56% of all Naval/Marine air victories of the war) at a cost of 270 Hellcats (an overall kill-to-loss ratio of 19:1). The aircraft performed well against the best Japanese opponents with a 13:1 kill ratio against Mitsubishi A6M, 9.5:1 against Nakajima Ki-84, 28:0 against Kawanishi N1K-J, and 3.7:1 against Mitsubishi J2M during the last year of the war. In the ground attack role, Hellcats dropped 6,503 tons of bombs. Dimensions: 8.5 L x 12 W x 6 H

Daron ESSN017 F4D-1 Skyray Navy

$155.4

F4D-1 Skyray is a carrier-based fighter built and manufactured by Douglas Aircraft Company. It became notable for being the first carrier-launched aircraft to hold the worlds absolute speed record and was the first US Navy fighter to exceed Mach 1 in level flight. The US Marine Corps also flew the Skyray. The F4D-1 Skyray was designed for high-altitude interception role, though it was unsuited to the multi-mission capabilities that became in demand, so it had a short life in Navy and Marine Corps service. In 1964, the last aircraft was withdrawn from service. Four Skyrays were used by NACA (shortly it became NASA) until 1969. The F4D has a wide delta wing design with long, sharply swept, rounded wings. The F4D-1 has a crew of 1. It incorporates Pratt & Whitney J57-P-8A. It has a maximum speed of 722 mph and a range of 700 mi. The primary users and operators of the F4D-1 were the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. The Skyray was one of the best-remembered early jet fighters and was affectionately known as the Ford . There were a total of 422 F4D-1s built. Dimensions: 12.875 L x 17 W x 7 H

F-89D Scorpion 1/48 Scale Model Aircraft

$131.31

The Northrop F-89 Scorpion is a twin-engine, all-weather fighter-interceptor designed to locate, intercept, and destroy enemy aircraft by day or night under all types of weather conditions. One of the most heavily armed fighter aircraft, it was the backbone of the United States Air Forces (USAF) Air Defense Command (ADC) for over 17 years, helping patrol the skies during the period when Soviet intercontinental bombers first became a threat. The F-89 was the first aircraft armed with nuclear weapons (the MB-1 Genie rocket) for air-to-air use. The Scorpion was a result of a 1945 US Army Air Forces specification for a jet-powered night fighter to replace the P-61 Black Widow. It was the first multi-seat, all-weather jet interceptor and the first aircraft designed to carry an all-rocket armament. Its advanced radar system was capable of tracking and engaging hostile bombers in any weather. A unique feature added to the prototype during development was the deceleron, a two-part aileron that could split open to act as an air brake. This feature became Northrops trademark and is still being used today, as can be seen on the B-2 Spirit. The F-89s name came from its resemblance to a scorpion ready to strike. The name stuck and was later officially recognized by the Air Force. The aircraft made its maiden flight on August 16, 1948. The first production F-89A was accepted by the USAF on September 28, 1950. Only eight aircraft were completed before the type was upgraded to the F-89B, with new avionics. Unfortunately, these had considerable problems with engines and other systems, and soon gave way to the F-89C. The first major production model was the F-89D, which first flew on October 23, 1951 and entered service in 1954. On July 19, 1957, a Genie test rocket was fired from an F-89J, the first time in history that an air-to-air rocket with a nuclear warhead was launched and detonated. There were no new-build F-89Js, but 350 F-89Ds were modified to this standard. These served w

Flying the Hump

$17.99

Noted historian Theodore White called it the most dangerous, terrifying, barbarous aerial transport run in the world…the skyway to Hell . This is the story of the air war over the Himalaya Mountains, in World War II, when Japan and China were locked in a death struggle. China was completely cut off from the world, and the transport planes of the Allies flew day and night missions for three and one half years over the Himalayas to keep China supplied with the needs of war. This was called the Hump. Gen. Claire Chennault’s Flying Tigers crossed the Hump to outgun the Japanese Zeros in some of the most spectacular air battles of World War II. More than one thousand airmen and six hundred transport planes were lost, flying air routes that were so dangerous they were called the aluminum trail . The B-29 Superfortress flew four-day missions across the Hump to bomb the Japanese mainland. The Hump was the epic of World War II in the air. This is a historical description of the development of air power in China, explaining the need for the Himalayan airlift and recording the important dates and events of the war over the Hump against Japan. Otha C. Spencer was a Hump pilot and recounts his own experiences and those of the men who flew the planes through the world’s worst weather over the world’s highest mountains. Dozens of photographs, most taken by Hump airmen, show the glory and tragedy of this great air war. This book will be an important addition to the libraries of the general reader as well as the military historian.

Every city-dweller has seen them, ever city-dweller could list the telltale signs: the fur, the gold, the hats, the cars. They are the original macks, the original players. They are Big City pimps–the heroes of gangsta rap. Bob Adelman and Susan Hall dive headlong into their world in the classic investigative docudrama Gentleman of Leisure: A Year in the Life of a Pimp, an in-depth exploration of the underworld figures that populate our streets at night. Armed only with a camera and a tape recorder, Adelman and Hall entered the lives of the pimp Silky and his women. This stunning expose of Silky and his ladies, Lois, Linda, Kitty, Tracey, and Sandy, explains the passionate bond between a pimp and his ho’s ; why shrewd, street-smart working girls find glamour in their lives and choose to give all their money to their pimp; and why they stay with him through incarcerations, despite their jealousies, the burden of their work, and occasional beatings. Greentown: Murder and Mystery in Greenwich, Connecticut, America’s Wealthiest Community

$4.03

Martha Moxley haunts Greenwich, Connecticut. The battered body of the pretty and popular fifteen-year-old girl was discovered on Halloween in 1975 in the exclusive Greenwich neighborhood of Belle Haven, where she lived. She had been bludgeoned to death on the front lawn of her home the night before – known in the town as Mischief Night . In the days immediately following the murder, rumors flew. Attention focused on members of the Skakel family, who lived across the street from the Moxleys. Thomas Skakel was the last know person to see Martha alive. The murder weapon, a ladies’ golf club, came from the Skakel household. When the Greenwich police tried to pursue its investigation, however, the community closed in upon itself. Walls went up, lawyers were summoned, information was suppressed. Gradually, inexorably, evidence grew stale, witnesses turned unreliable, sources dried up, and suspects – Thomas Skakel was not the only one – went on with their lives. No one was ever charged. A Greenwich native and journalist, Dumas gives us an account of the Moxley case and its aftermath, showing how and why it has become woven into the very fabric of the town itself.

Gunning for the Red Baron

$20.4

The daring air aces of World War I faced more than the enemy when they took to the sky–they faced the odds. Their chances of being hit were high; the odds of their hitting the enemy were low. One pilot, French Captain Albert Moris, reported 400 hits to his aircraft in his 253 hours of flying, more than a hit per hour. Even the most maneuverable of the British fighters, the Sopwith Camel, lost as many machines as its pilots shot down. Pilots flying Camels rang up 1,294 victories, but 1,500 machines were lost to accidents and enemy fire, and many Camel pilots died within weeks of entering combat. Was it luck or skill that sustained the Red Baron, the German ace who flew, fought, and thrived until he was finally shot down in April 1918? Gunning for the Red Baron gives the lowdown on why it was so hard to score a hit, what qualities helped the aces succeed, and the weapons and planes that were celebrated in the air war to end wars. Most basically, this richly illustrated book explains why aim was so notoriously bad. Drawing on his army service at the Ballistics Research Lab, data from London’s Public Records Office, and careful study of Great War technology, author Leon Bennett analyzes combat sequences, the arts of aerial gunnery, and the weapons themselves. His detailed insight into the mechanics of air warfare allows him to reach some starling conclusions about one of the enduring controversies of World War I: what finally brought the Red Baron down.

Hazel Jane Raines, Pioneer Lady of Flight

$37.1

Hazel Jane Raines’s passion for flying led to her placement in the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame for her contribution in peace and in war as Georgia’s Pioneer Lady of Flight. Her career in aviation is documented in a series of letters written to her mother from 1942 until her death in 1956. These letters are filled with humor, courage, observations on the war in England, and conversations with notable people such as Jacqueline Cochran, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Lady Astor. Born in 1916, Hazel Raines barnstormed with the local air shows in the 1930s and was recognized as one of the South’s outstanding flyers. In 1942, she was chosen by Jacqueline Cochran as one of twenty-five American women to ferry planes with the Air Transport Auxiliary in England. These pilots flew through ballon barrages without ammunition or radio, delivering planes to factories for repair and to RAF Squadrons. Hazel Raines’s wartime experiences in England included a Christmas visit with Lady Astor at her Cliveden Estate, and crashing a Spitfire through the roof of an English house. After returning to the United States, Raines joined the WASPs, organized in 1943 by her friend and mentor, Jackie Cochran. Raines tested and delivered planes to American pilots and towed targets in a B-26 so that fledgling gunnery students could practice shooting. During the Korean Crisis, Hazel was the first female reserve pilot to be called to active duty. She returned to England in 1954 as WAF Advisor for the Third Air Force. She is credited with 6,400 flying hours in 44 types of airplanes. From 1938 to 1944, she flew Taylorcrafts, Tiger Mothers, Hurricanes, Spitfires, BT 13a, and AT 11s, a remarkable feat.

Annotation:Captain Chesley Sully Sullenberger became a national hero after his miraculous water landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River after both of the plane’s engines lost power as the result of collision with a flock of birds. Though his fame came from the actions of a few hours, his autobiography Highest Duty shows that his remarkable calm and focus came from a lifetime of responsibility and preparation. The son of a World War II Veteran, Sullenberger learned from his father that a true leader is responsible for the lives of those entrusted to him. He took this ethos with him from the day he flew his first plane (a crop-duster) at the age of 16, until that fateful day nearly 40 years later when all of the 155 passengers onboard his flight survived the crash landing–something Sullenberger made sure of by inspecting the sinking airplane twice, before, like a true captain, leaving last. From the Publisher:In this inspirational autobiography, Captain Sully Sullenberger, the airline pilot whose emergency landing on the Hudson River earned the world’s admiration, tells his life story and talks about the essential qualities that he believes have been so vital to his success. In January 2009, the world witnessed one of the most remarkable emergency landings in history when Captain Sullenberger brought a crippled US Airways flight onto the Hudson River, saving the lives of all of the passengers and crew aboard. The successful outcome was the result of effective teamwork, Sully’s dedication to airline safety, his belief that a pilot’s judgment must go hand-in-hand with — and can never be replaced by — technology, and forty years of careful practice and training. From his earliest memories of learning to fly as a teenager in a crop duster’s single-engine plane in the skies above rural Texas to his years in the United States Air Force at the controls of a powerful F-4 Phantom, Sully describes the experiences that have

Hornets over Kuwait

$145.11

While most books about the Gulf War have been written by military leaders, politicians, or journalists, this lively memoir comes from a Marine F/A-18 pilot who flew thirty-seven sorties against the Iraqis during Desert Storm. Infused with the cocky confidence – and sometimes ribald humor – of a young pilot fighting in one of the world’s fastest and most lethal machines, this book offers readers a fascinating blend of technological and human dynamics. Jay Stout describes his own aerial actions and those of his comrades and also writes about the mundane issues associated with being at war. Screaming combat aircraft, exploding bombs, streaking missiles, and enemy casualties are covered side-by-side with homesickness, bad food, and toilet humor. Nor does the author pull any punches in his assessments of leadership, tactics, aircraft, and women in the military. Many of the controversial subjects he discusses in the context of the Gulf War are relevant today and will influence the direction of tomorrow’s military.

Hot Times During the Cold War: An American Comes of Age in West Germany

$11.95

From 1985 to 1988, Scott W. Hawley, the son of a U.S. Air Force officer, lived on Rhein Main Air Force Base, a bustling U.S. military installation located in the heart of what was then West Germany. One of six hundred children of U.S. military personnel attending Frankfurt American High School, he lived the unique experience of being an American teenager in Germany during the Cold War. While Hawley and his friends studied calculus and chemistry and sold candy bars to send the track team to Brussels, their parents commanded tank battalions, flew transport aircraft, and honed their combat skills. Hawley came of age in a community preparing for Armageddon, yet he reveled in the wondrous so-what cacophony of stoners, drama geeks, skaters, letter-jacket athletes, and break-dancers. A memoir in poetic verse, Hot Times during the Cold War artfully captures the energy of living on the edge at a time when the world held its collective breath.

I Stand Convicted: The True Story of an Innocent Man Who Was Guilty as Sin

$17.95

The cop busted through the door and I dove out the window and into the cold night air. It was 4am, mid-December, and all I was wearing was my underwear. A thin swirl of snow circled the ground, three floors below. With his gun in one hand, the cop grabbed my leg as soon as I was out the window. He held me in place, and I stood perpendicular to the outside wall of the building. I tried to kick off the wall with the foot that was free, but I kicked the cops hand instead, and he dropped his gun and loosened his grip on my leg.I pulled free and flew away, and as I floated in the air, time played a cruel trick on me. It let me fall so slow that I had plenty of time to think how bad it was going to hurt when I landed. I calmly wondered if I would be alive once I hit the ground. I was comforted by the thought, that; if I wasn”t, I would have made good my escape. The cops would certainly have me then; but, at least I would be free. It felt good, sailing through that black void, expecting what was to come. Because, in that period of time, I was free … I was as free as a bird in captivity.

If You Only Knew

Samantha awoke with the sun shining in her face. She yawned, stretching her arms above her head. She started to run her fingers through her hair, but was unable. Her fingers became tangled in short, tight curls. Samantha gasped and sat straight up. What in the world . Her heart pounded with fear. What happened to my beautiful hair? Her eyes flew open. She stared at the new surroundings. Pink wallpaper with little white roses covered the walls. A frilly, white-lace curtain hung on the enormous bay window. The room was filled with heavy, wooden antique furniture. Expensive porcelain dolls were neatly placed on the oak shelves covering one wall. Where am I? uttered Samantha. She got out of bed and looked around the room. Where am I? She turned her head toward a full-length mirror and gasped at the reflection. It was a stranger that stared back at her. The figure in the mirror was a very fat girl with pale green eyes, short, curly red hair, fair skin, and a face covered with freckles. Her eyes grew wide with recognition. Virginia Morris! What”s going on here? Why am I seeing Virginia and not myself?

Into the Wild Blue Yonder: My Life in the Air Force

$59.31

Allan T. Stein idolized his uncle, a pilot in the Great War. So in 1943, in the midst of the Second World War, he left Texas A&M University for Lackland Air Field to learn to fly. By the time he retired as a licutenant colonel in 1969, Stein had flown everything from BT-13s and B-24s to B-52s and C-47s. During World War II, he flew missions over China and the Sea of Japan, and by V-J Day, he had participated in eight campaigns and logged 347 hours in combat. Stein later spent one year in Vietnam as operations officer for the 360 TEWS (Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron), which used refitted C-47s to monitor and locate Vietcong units. He ended his career as inspector general of the Civil Air Patrol. Stein remembers drinking 10-cent beers in San Antonio and running an AT-17 into a dry lake bed outside Lubbock. He recalls a B-25 crashing into a stockade and a mission over the Atlantic that almost ended tragically due to bad weather and because his flight of B-47s could not refuel properly. During the 1940s, money was always short and the future uncertain, so he and his wife lived cheaply in cramped apartments and converted garages. Yet he recalls that the camaraderic among air force personnel and their families made those the best years of their lives. Stein considers himself to have been an ordinary airman, not a hero. But he was also a seasoned pilot and a conscientious officer with a strong sense of right and wrong. After a pilot he had trained and certified died in an accident, Stein made it a practice to fail all but the best candidates. He was just as disgusted with the corruption he encountered in the Civil Air Patrol as he was with the tendentious reporters he met in Saigon’sHotel Caravelle. Although he met his share of cowards and scoundrels, Stein loved to fly and he loved the air force. He was the sort of officer his superiors trusted not to make mistakes, but he was not the sort to rise to high rank. What he offers here is an account of a typical career a

Jack Nicholson

$0.73

Jack Nicholson was over thirty, and more than a decade into his acting career, when Easy Rider finally made him a star. His reputation as a rebellious anti-hero was furthered by three notorious confrontations in films of the 1970s: Five Easy Pieces, The Last Detail, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo”s Nes t. He has played villains in The Shining and Batman, a hot-headed marine colonel in A Few Good Men, and a ruthless mob boss in The Departed. However, some of his best performances are in less showy roles where his skill is conveyed through subtlety. Jack has often turned down big money parts in order to take riskier roles such as the grim, introverted men in Ironweed, The Crossing Guard, The Pledge, and About Schmidt. Undoubtedly, Nicholson is a very fine actor, and in Chinatown he gives what may be his most memorable performance.

Jimmy Stewart

$2.8

Of all the celebrities who served their country during World War II -and they were legion -Jimmy Stewart was unique. On December 7th, when the attack on Pearl Harbor woke so many others to the reality of war, Stewart was already in uniform – as a private on guard duty south of San Francisco at the Army Air Corps Moffet Field. Seeing war on the horizon, Jimmy Stewart, at the height of his fame after Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and his Oscar-winning turn in The Phadelphia Story in 1940, had enlisted several months earlier. Jimmy Stewart, Bomber Pilot chronicles his long journey to become a bomber pilot in combat. Author Starr Smith, the intelligence officer assigned to the movie star, recounts how Stewart’s first battles were with the Air Corps high command, who insisted on keeping the naturally talented pilot out of harm’s way as an instructor pilot for B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators. By 1944, however, Stewart managed to get assigned to a Liberator squadron that was deploying to England to join the mighty Eighth Air Force. Once in the thick of it, he rose to command his own squadron and flew twenty combat missions, including one to Berlin. My father would feel honored by this book. –Kelly Stewart Harcourt, daughter of Jimmy Stewart We would have made Jimmy a group commander equivalent to an army regiment if the war had lasted another month. – General Jimmy Doolittle. Laurel”s disturbing and abusive childhood, followed by a poor marriage, resulted in a month-long visit to a mental hospital, where in the 1960s, the use of electroshock and insulin shock therapy was prevalent. With humor and pathos, Laurel poignantly describes her insulin and shock treatments, the insensitivity of the hospital staff, and the numerous psychiatric problems of various patients. The author, now a PhD. in psychology, relates her memoirs with insight and compassion. In addition to the mistreatment of mental patients in the 50s and 60s, the accounts of various psychiatric disturbances will be of particular interest to students of human nature. Similar to One Flew Over the Cuckoo”s Nest, Laurel”s story of her thirty days of treatment provides an expose of the pitifully inadequate treatment for mental health issues at that time.

May Day! May Day!: Close Encounters

World War II was the first conflict in which air power was a deciding and indispensable factor. May Day! May Day! Close Encounters (An Instructor Pilot Remembers) reveals the personal stories of the aircrews who flew and maintained the planes and who upheld a continuous supply of trained personnel for the war effort. Full of rich, historical detail, author and former World War II pilot Jack Scott shares his experiences and those of others, giving an insightful view into the American home front and the war overseas. While assigned to Walker Air Base, we were subjected to all of the restrictions of rationing. Shoes, food, clothes and just about everything was rationed. One thing, however never ceased to amaze us. We were allowed only a minimum amount of gasoline for our personal autos, yet we were encouraged to practice touch and go landings as often as we personally desired and were often reminded that at the end of every mission we should make a few extra landings and take offs. The paradox of this was that on one ”go around we would burn a minimum of 80 gallons of aviation fuel. Rationing did not apply here.

P-38J Lightning 1/48 Scale Model Aircraft

$74.04

During World War II, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning was an American heavy fighter aircraft used by the US Air Force. Developed to a United States Army Air Corps requirement, the P-38 had distinctive twin booms and a single, central nacelle containing the pilot and armament. The aircraft was used in a number of different roles, including dive bombing, level bombing, ground strafing, photo reconnaissance missions, and extensively as a long-range escort fighter when equipped with droppable fuel tanks under its wings. The P-38 had the same power plants as the YP-38, but armament was changed to one 37-mm cannon and four 0.50-in machine guns. Armor plate and bulletproof glass was added for pilot protection, and fluorescent instrument lighting was provided for night flying. Designed by Engineer Clarence Kelly Johnson, the P-38 Lightning flew for the first time on January 27, 1939. The P-38J model of Lightning, fastest of the all Lightning series, was one of the most widely used aircraft during World War II. Compared to previous models of Lightning, P-38J had an improved propeller to help with speed and climb, a more powerful pair of engines, greater armament, minor inter-generational tweaks and boosted ailerons made it much easier to handle and very effective. Used in Europe during World War II, the Germans called it the Forked Tail Devil. Dimensions: 9.25 L x 12 W x 5 H

P-51D Mustang Betty Jane 1/24 Scale Model Aircraft

$135.95

The Tuskegee Airmen was the popular name of a group of African American pilots who flew with distinction during World War II. The Tuskegee Airmen were initially equipped with P-40 warhawks, briefly with P-39 Airacobras, later with P-47 Thunderbolts and finally with the P-51 Mustang, the airplane in which they became most identifed with. The P-51 Mustang is a long-range single-seat fighter aircraft and became one of the conflict’s most successful and recognizable aircraft. The P-51 Mustang is credited for providing very effective long range bomber escort. The Allied daylight bombing campaign proved extremely successful by strangling the support lines of the enemy and nearly stopping the production of war-time machinery. The P-51 Mustang and the crew who had flown them saved lives in the skies and on the ground. The concept of the P-51 Mustang began more than three years before the first daylight bombing missions and the heavy losses. It was often accepted that the P-51 Mustang was designed to be an escort fighter. By the time heavy bomber losses were at hand, the P-51B and P-51C, with outstanding range, were already in production and being delivered to bases in England. The North American Mustang was the immediate choice and the bombers fondly called them as little friends. With the hard work of warbird fanatics around the world, there are about 280 P-51s that still exist today with more than half still airworthy. A few remaining P-51s have the distinction of serving for more than 30 years with almost four different air forces around the world.

Psych 101 – What You Didn’t Learn in Nursing School

I read everything the local college had to offer on psychiatric nursing, and I thought, They sure didn”t treat me this way. I decided to dive into a higher level of learning and studied books from the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and from Aaronson Publishing. This book is a compilation of my essays over the years and was created from therapeutic models that resonate with actual experience. Also, for individuals that want to learn about developmental psychology to understand human behavior. Much of my writings were extracted from the work of Glenn O. Gabbard, Margaret Mahler and Sam Vaknin. Building a therapeutic alliance is imperative to get treatment compliance. Pushing The Envelope

$13.68

First published in 1994, this stirring autobiography of a fighter and test pilot takes readers full throttle through Carl’s imposing list of firsts. Beginning with his World War II career, he gained such commendations as first Marine Corps ace, among the first Marines ever to fly a helicopter, and first Marine to land aboard an aircraft carrier. His combat duty included the momentous battles at Midway and Guadalcanal. Not one to rest on his laurels, however, he participated in photoreconnaissance operations over Red China in 1955 and flew missions in Vietnam. In peacetime he gamed fame for pushing the envelope as a test pilot, adding the world’s altitude and peace records to his wartime feats and becoming the first U.S. military aviator to wear a full pressure suit. Such achievements also led to Carl’s being the first living Marine admitted to the Naval Aviation Hall of Honor, as well as the first Marine to be named to the Navy Carrier Aviation Test Pilots Hall of Honor. This very readable memoir is as forthright and compelling as the man it chronicles.

Red Tail Captured, Red Tail Free

$29.95

This book is a rare and important gift. One of the few memoirs of combat in World War II by a distinguished African-American flier, it is also perhaps the only account of the African-American experience in a German prison camp. Alexander Jefferson was one of 32 Tuskegee Airmen from the 32nd Fighter Group to be shot down defending a country that considered them to be second-class citizens. A Detroit native, Jefferson enlisted in 1942, trined at Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, became a second lieutenant in 1943, and joined one of the most decorated fighting units in the War, flying P51s with their legendary and feared red tails. Based in Italy, Jefferson flew bomber escort missions over southern Europe before being shot down in France in 1944. Captured, he spent the balance of the war in Luftwaffe prison camps in Sagan and Moosberg, Germany. In this vividly detailed, deeply personal book, Jefferson writes as a genuine American hero and patriot.
