Horror books and the improvement of horror music

Horror books and the improvement of horror music

It’s obvious to anyone going to the theaters on a semi regular basis in this modern day and age that horror music are ever improving in quality and caliber. Writers and directors are finally figuring out what makes a good horror movie and what makes a bad one. But something many of us fail to remember is that many of these music today are based off of fantastic horror books. That’s right, many (if not most) if the great new horror music are based off of classic or modern horror books.
Granted, some of the newer music aren’t the best. But many filmmakers have kept true to the horror books that their music are inspired by. For example, recently the movie 1408 has been released, based off of a Stephen King short story. This is a great example of excellent execution of a movie based off of famous horror books. Similarly, The Mist was released recently also based off of a Stephen King short story. The Mist is another excellent example of a movie successfully doing justice to its inspiring horror books origin.
However, we have seen filmmakers dabbling in new territories and breaking free from many of the tired tried and true formulas of slasher music and teen killing romps. It seems as though many filmmakers are looking at horror books in the small press and independent press for good ideas. This we should all be thankful about. Sure, Stephen King is a great writer, but there are countless talented writers in the small and indy press just dying to have one of their horror books turned into film. Now let’s not forget the power of the internet! Now with barriers disappearing seemingly on a daily basis, more and more independent folks are able to see their horror books adapted into film. Sure, many of these indy films won’t see the big screen and will probably have a limited Dvd Release, but that doesn’t mean they’re not good! It simply means they didn’t have the financial backing to get the coverage that more major video companies would have supplied. Still, we cannot stress enough how important it is that horror books are having such a large influence in the film industry and it can safely be said that there’s a very bright future for all of us in the realms of horror books and horror music.

Stokowski First Releases

Stokowski First Releases

$14.38

In 2010, Cala Records announced the conclusion of its Stokowski Society-sponsored releases, which in the end ran to 33 issues published over a period of 15 years. Stokowski: First Releases was the first in this series and was wholly devoted to Stokowski recordings, which, at the time, had never been released at all, ranging chronologically from 1927 to 1944 and featuring the esteemed maestro in selections performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, NBC Symphony, and New York City Symphony, which later merged with the New York Philharmonic. With the exception of the opening track, all of these are studio recordings, and the live recording was a special giveaway item made professionally at a live benefit concert. That track is likely the rarest and also least interesting item on the disc, but it is followed by the uproarious Balance Test March, an orchestral improvisation used to check levels on which the only objective was to be as LOUD as possible; here, one can here the bass drum pounding away, orchestral members shouting and yee-haw-ing and other multileveled brands of chaos while the band blows away at full volume on an overly simple tune. For those interested in deconstruction, this is a classic and should not be missed, whereas others may well wonder, “What’s the point?”While Balance Test March may not really constitute a Stokowski composition, per se, there are numerous Stokowski orchestral transcriptions afoot, and including his set of Schubert Deutschers entitled Tyrolean Dances, his transcription of a Tchaikovsky song, the “Pastoral Symphony” from Handel’s Messiah, Stephen Foster’s “Oh, Susannah!,” and Scriabin’s Etude in C sharp, Op. 2/1. In terms of real works there’s a blazing 1944 recording of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, the “Dance of the Seven Veils” from Richard Strauss’ Salome, and two mega-obscurities of American composers, Joseph La Monaca’s Saltarello and “Sunset Reflections” from Robert Kelly’s Adirondack Suite. Much of this will prove terribly arcane to the average listener, though the sound is always quite good and for expert ears — particularly those well versed in Stokowski — this will be a treasure trove. Moreover, despite being as short as it is at only 1:44, there’s really isn’t anything quite like the Balance Test March. ~ Uncle Dave Lewis , Rovi

His Final Releases 1919-1922

His Final Releases 1919-1922

Archeophone presents a third volume of the complete recordings of Afro-American vaudeville legend Bert Williams, immaculately remastered and arranged in chronological order. The time line represented here extends from February 13, 1919, to February 24, 1922, eight days before his death in Detroit, which occurred one week short of his 47th birthday. Born in the West Indies and raised near Los Angeles, CA, Egbert Williams developed a two-man vaudeville act with Kansas-born comic George Walker beginning in 1893. Starting up in San Francisco and making their way east through Chicago, the duo of Williams and Walker soon enjoyed popular success in New York and London, and were among the first Afro-Americans to make phonograph recordings. After Walker’s premature death from syphilis in 1911, Williams established himself as a solo act and soon became a mainstay in the Ziegfeld Follies. By the time the recordings on this compilation were made, Bert Williams was one of the wealthiest entertainers in all of show business. Note that two very popular musicians accessed Bert Williams’ material years after he had passed; Phil Harris bolstered his own popularity with songs like “The Darktown Poker Club” and Louis Armstrong re-created both of Williams’ “Elder Eatmore” sermons for Decca Records on August 11, 1938. The written and photographic documentation provided by Archeophone is enormously informative; insightful essays, vintage posters, publicity stills, and detailed discography and bibliography listings make this the definitive and indispensable Bert Williams edition. W.C. Fields supplied the best of all elegies for this remarkable entertainer: “Bert Williams was the funniest man I ever saw, and the saddest man I ever knew.” ~ arwulf arwulf, Rovi

Robin Wood has noted that horror 'has consistently been one of the most popular and, at the same time, the most disreputable of Hollywood genres'. Horror is still immensely popular but its assimilation into our culture continues apace. In "Horror Zone", leading international writers on horror take horror into the world outside cinema screens to explore the interconnections between the films and modern media and entertainment industries, economies and production practices, cultural and political forums, spectators and fans. They critically examine the ways in which the horror genre functions in all its multifarious forms, considering, for example, the Friday the 13th films as a contemporary grand guignol, the new series of Mummy and Blade films as blockbusters, and horror film marketing on the Internet. They also examine the relationship between the contemporary horror film and the theme park ride, the horror film as art house cinema, relationships between pornography and the horror film, set and costume design in horror films such as "The Silence of the Lambs", and the place of special effects in this most reputable of film genres.

A History of Horror

A History of Horror

$24.95

Ever since horror leapt from popular fiction to the silver screen in the late 1890s, viewers have experienced fear and pleasure in exquisite combination. Wheeler Winston Dixon’s A History of Horror is the only book to offer a comprehensive survey of this ever-popular film genre. Arranged by decades, with outliers and franchise films overlapping some years, this one-stop sourcebook unearths the historical origins of characters such as Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolfman and their various incarnations in film from the silent era to comedic sequels. A History of Horror explores how the horror film fits into the Hollywood studio system and how its enormous success in American and European culture expanded globally over time. Dixon examines key periods in the horror film-in which the basic precepts of the genre were established, then banished into conveniently reliable and malleable forms, and then, after collapsing into parody, rose again and again to create new levels of intensity and menace. A History of Horror , supported by rare stills from classic films, brings over fifty timeless horror films into frightfully clear focus, zooms in on today’s top horror Web sites, and champions the stars, directors, and subgenres that make the horror film so exciting and popular with contemporary audiences.

Aspiring genre filmmakers and horror fans alike will want to check out director Christopher P. Garetano documentary exploring the colorful world of independent fright cinema. With subjects including Wisconsin-based auteur Mark Borchardt, Las Vegas-based “method director” Ron Atkins, and New York drive-in junkie David Stagnari, Garetano shows how, with a vivid imagination, a dash of innovation, and some staunch determination, even filmmakers who lack adequate funds and resources can create compelling and entertaining horror films. Additional appearances by iconic horror figures Joe Bob Briggs and Herschell Gordon Lewis drive home Garetano’s point by highlighting precisely how low-budget horror take the kind of risks needed to keep the genre fresh and exciting. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The Horror of It All

The Horror of It All

Those who have fallen under the spell of the Fat Possum label’s brand of raw, rocking Delta blues are bound to find plenty to like in the music of Cedell Davis. That said, Davis doesn’t really sound like anyone else on the label…nor any other for that matter. His angular, atonal bottleneck guitar playing and garbled vocals are bound to offend many fans of slick, contemporary urban blues, but for a raw taste of the Delta you need not look further. Although the songs and performances on The Horror of It All rank a notch below those on 1994′s Feel Like Doin’ Something Wrong, it’s still a strong outing. Davis goes it alone with his guitar on most of the tracks; joined only by drums on one song; and drums, bass, and second guitar on another. Yet, despite the sparseness of the instrumentation, the album offers more variety than most of the contemporaneous releases on the label. Davis veers comfortably from the type of hypnotic, droning blues favored by deceased labelmate Junior Kimbrough on tracks like “The Horror” to John Lee Hooker-like boogies such as “I Want You.” Mostly, though, Davis sounds like no one so much as himself. As per usual with Fat Possum Records releases, even the most familiar blues on the album (e.g., “Keep on Snatchin’ It Back, “Coon Can Mattie”) are listed as originals, and one song (“If You Like Fat Women”) is reprised from the earlier album. None of which matters, of course, when the performances are this spirited. Davis manages to make each of these songs his own. The Horror of It All makes a nice addition to any Delta blues collection. ~ Jeffrey Konkel, Rovi Performers: Calvin Jackson – Drums; Dale Beavers – Bass; Kenny Brown – Guitar; Sam Carr – Drums

Bottin, AKA Guglielmo Bottin, first crossed paths with us at the Carnival of Venice. He was playing live synth whilst Bearfunk head-bear Stevie was DJing. After more DJing & some jovial keyboard sessions and some seriously impressive listening, we knew we had just found our favourite new Venetian. The Horror Disco concept all started with the chance loan of a noisy, old, incontrollable, 70s Farfisa Syntochestra synthesizer. This proved to be the weapon of choice for several of the tracks on the album (Mary Lewis, Magnetic Cat) with Bottin building up hand-played layers old school style. A few tweaks of the Farfisa led our man to the world of sounds he grew up to: the soundtracks to Italian slasher B-movies (like those by Lucio Fulci, Bava, Argento & Alberto Martino), but also futuristic horror scenarios, cosmic travels and close encounters with space vampires… The die was set. Horror Disco melds these soundtrack and aural ideas with a 100% disco album. One that drifts away from most of the soulful elements of disco and one that is dirtier, warmer and less polished than contemporary Scandinavian nu-disco. The album is wide and varied – Slashdance gives us a Goblin-esque robo-vocoder-disco, Roger Bacon is pure cosmic groove, whilst the Italo-disco-Thriller Disco For The Devil features the vocals of Italian-based, UK-born session master Douglas Meakin who back in the day was lead vocalist in Simonettis Easy Going and Crazy Gang cult disco projects. The film influence is ever present too, Horror Disco is the Giallo intro opener. Venezia Violenta is the imaginary soundtrack to a futuristic cowboy flick Westworld and the closing track Endless Mother is pure John Carpenter 1982 vibe, rejuvenated by a screaming synth ostinato. The well-received, recent, single and Italo chunker No Static is also included. Horror Disco is an impressive album with a rare attention to detail. We hope you like it as much as we do.

Soon, Nan finds that rest of the hotels boarders are witches as well and that she is about to become their annual Candalmas Eve sacrifice. Atmospheric and genuinely scary, HORROR HOTEL not only stars the inimitable Christopher Lee, but boasts direction by John Llewellyn Moxley, who would later go on to direct episodes of classic TV shows such as THE AVENGERS, HAWAII FIVE-O, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, CHARLIE’S ANGELS, KUNG FU, MAGNUM P.I., and MIAMI VICE. The 78 minute uncut version is titled CITY OF THE DEAD.

“For God’s sake, GET OUT!” was the ad campaign for the 1979 shocker The Amityville Horror. The film was based on the allegedly true story of the luckless Lutz family, who move lock, stock, and barrel into a new home, only to find that it is possessed by the demonic spirits of its previous owners. Variations of the Seven Deadly Plagues emanate from virtually every household fixture, while other forms of otherworldly mischief are suffered by the Lutz children. Enter kindly Father Delaney (Rod Steiger), who does his utmost to exorcise the house. The Amityville Horror was frequently greeted with laughs from its first-run audiences, especially after it was discovered that the “actual” events depicted in the film (based on a book by Jay Anson) were complete fabrications. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Victor Pelevin, the iconoclastic and wildly interesting contemporary Russian novelist who The New Yorker named one of the Best European Writers Under 35, upends any conventional notions of what mythology must be with his unique take on the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. By creating a mesmerizing world where the surreal and the hyperreal collide, The Helmet of Horror is a radical retelling of the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur set in an Internet chat room. They have never met, they have been assigned strange pseudonyms, they inhabit identical rooms that open out onto very different landscapes, and they have entered a dialogue they cannot escape–a discourse defined and destroyed by the Helmet of Horror. Its wearer is the dominant force they call Asterisk, a force for good and ill in which the Minotaur is forever present and Theseus is the great unknown. The Helmet of Horror is structured according to the way we communicate in the twenty-first century–using the Internet–yet instilled with the figures and narratives of classical mythology. It is a labyrinthine examination of epistemological uncertainty that radically reinvents this myth for an age where information is abundant but knowledge ultimately unattainable.
