Making Movies $7.18 Without second guitarist David Knopfler, Dire Straits began to move away from its roots rock origins into a jazzier variation of country-rock and singer/songwriter folk-rock. Naturally, this means that Mark Knopfler’s ambitions as a songwriter are growing, as the storytelling pretensions of Making Movies indicate. Fortunately, his skills are increasing, as the lovely “Romeo and Juliet,” “Tunnel of Love,” and “Skateaway” indicate. And Making Movies is helped by a new wave-tinged pop production, which actually helps Knopfler’s jazzy inclinations take hold. Midnight at the Movies $11.98 “I am my father’s son/ I’ve never known when to shut up/I ain’t foolin’ no one/I am my father’s son.” These words lead off the fourth song on Justin Townes Earle’s second album, Midnight at the Movies, and given that many people still know him as the son of iconic singer/songwriter Steve Earle, it’s a brave and startling statement. But at the same time, much like his 2008 debut The Good Life, Earle’s second album works because he seems determined not be his father’s son; the tone and the feel of this music owes precious little to the family line, and Earle sounds appreciably more relaxed, confident, and in control here than he did on his fine debut. Earle’s music has one toe tangled in hillbilly tradition on the folk ballad pastiche “They Killed John Henry,” the uptempo string band number “Black Eyed Suzy,” and the honky tonk swing of “Poor Fool,” but he can write about love and life with a clear and unaffected eye that’s effortlessly timeless. The title song is a musical snapshot that gets its Nighthawks details just right, “Someday I’ll Be Forgiven for This” and “Here We Go Again” are painfully intimate examinations of what can happen between people who care for each other, and while “Poor Fool” and “Walk Out” sound jaunty, they have a weight behind them that’s telling. And while Earle doesn’t sound like a guy who should be covering the Replacements, his version of “Can’t Hardly Wait” finds a sweet heartache at the core that Paul Westerberg was afraid to show in his recording. Producers began clamouring to back gay-themed movies, including I Love You Philip Morris with Jim Carey and Ewan McGregor, and Gus Van Sant’s Milk, starring Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, the first prominent American political figure to be elected to office on an openly gay ticket back in the 70s. So loved was he that his brutal and homophobic assassination by ex-policeman Daniel White sparked the biggest riots in gay history. Out at the Movies looks back, decade by decade, at the history of gay cinema, celebrating the films which have defined the genre. Indie films, the avant-garde, sex on screen, bad guys, lesbian lovers, transgender films, camp comedies, musicals and gay rom-coms – all are featured here. As well as highloighting the key movements and triumphs in gay cinema, the author includes information on gay filmmakers and actors, and their influence within the industry. First, it assembles, in chronological order, notable songs that Doris Day sang in her films during her first decade as a movie star; second, with titles like “It’s Magic,” “Secret Love,” and “Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera),” it functions as a hits collection; and, perhaps surprisingly, third, it arguably is a rarities album as well. Annotator Max O. Preeo, writing with the benefit of an interview with his subject, notes that the version of “It’s Magic” included here is the actual original hit version recorded in 1947; apparently all subsequent reissues of the song have been of a re-recording Day did in 1952. Several other songs, including the title tunes from her second and third films, My Dream Is Yours and It’s a Great Feeling, are given their first release since they came out initially, and the version of “I Love The Way You Say Goodnight” from Lullaby of Broadway is released commercially for the first time. While making a series of musicals for Warner Bros. pictures in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Day benefited from the opportunity to sing old and new songs by such classic pop writers as Sammy Cahn, Vernon Duke, Ray Evans, Sammy Fain, E.Y. Harburg, Lorenz Hart, Gus Kahn, Jay Livingston, Richard Rodgers, Jule Styne, Harry Warren, and Vincent Youmans, and to perform (on these, mostly non-soundtrack studio versions) backed by such bandleaders as Frank DeVol, Percy Faith, Ray Heindorf, Harry James, Axel Stordahl, and Paul Weston. She made the most of those connections, using her band-singer background and warm tone to create performances that were the highpoints of the often flimsy films in which they appeared. Diane Hubka Goes to the Movies $40.79 Since moving to the West Coast from New York City, jazz vocalist Diane Hubka has worked with a different group of musicians than on earlier CDs. Her first recording since the cross-country move finds her in top form, backed by an outstanding group including pianist/arranger Christian Jacob (who works with both Tierney Sutton and Flora Purim and was with his late father-in-law Maynard Ferguson for a time), trumpeter and flugelhornist Carl Saunders (a leader in his own right and member of various all-star Los Angeles big bands), guitarist Larry Koonse, bassist Chris Colangelo and drummer Joe LaBarbera (the late Bill Evans’ last drummer). Hubka’s subtle vocal style works in her favor, as the cool-toned singer doesn’t use a lot of theatrics to get lyrics across, while she occasionally enjoys scatting in unison with her musicians in an engaging way. One of the her strengths has been choosing lesser known or out of favor songs; her theme for this outing consists of works debuted in movies, many of which will surprise the listener. Her modern bop treatment of the decades-old “All God’s Chillun Got Rhythm,” the gently seductive interpretation of “The Look of Love” (with lush backing by Jacob), the playful bossa nova setting of “He’s a Tramp” and the hip rendition of “Close Enough for Love” (featuring Koonse and Colangelo) showcase how wide-ranging a musician Hubka is. Perhaps the greatest surprise is “You Only Live Twice,” from the James Bond film series; her understated delivery with minimal backing from her rhythm section reveals a great song that was hidden in its movie debut due to an overblown arrangement. Finally, Hubka accompanies herself on acoustic guitar in a masterful performance of “Manhã de Carnaval” (sung in Portuguese).
